Pacific Northwest Area “L” & Division 4 Youth Sailing

We are in 2008 and our sailing season is just around the corner. There is a lot planned for this year.
Out here in the Northwest we have put together a plan for 2008. It builds on great work by very dedicated sailors. This year we have several events that are going to focus on getting the kids on the water in a bit of a different environment where they are the focus for the event. See attached Youth Letter by Laura Sullivan, a wonderful job of inviting our local young people out to sail this year. Next Post.

We hope to increase the level of youth participation in cat sailing, whether it is recreational, cruising or racing. We want to draw in a new group to go along with the existing youth sailors we have. It will begin with fun & familiarization, skills, then racing.

Our goal is to make it as easy for the kids to participate in sailing as we can. All of our events are free to the youth that are participating. And most of the costs so far are being covered by donations.

Here is a list of what we have planned

Potholes Warm Up, April 4-6 , the first outing for the kids. We are bringing 8 Waves and various other boats. No racing just fun on the water.
Hobie 101 & Youth Clinic, May 10 , planned as a racing skills clinic for the kids.
Summer Celebration, July 26 & 27 , Youth only regatta.
This regatta is a two-day event for the multi- hull sailing youth of the Pacific Northwest. You are invited to sail in any of the various skilled fleets available. There is a spot that is just right for you! H16s and Waves available.
Oktoberfest, September 27 & 28 , Youth Only Regatta.
Another regatta that is a two-day event for the multi- hull sailing youth of the Pacific Northwest. H16s and Waves available.

These are four events that there will not be adult racing at. We hope to grow a new crop of youth sailors not only from the dingy fleets, but from our families and friends.
Hopefully this is only a start.

This is a Letter that is beeing sent out to all of the local parents in our are that have children that may be interested in multi hull sailing of any kind.
Something like this could be started in all of the regions to get participation.
Thanks very much to Laura Sullivan for writting this letter.

Happy New Year!!!!
To all Youth sailors and all Parents of Youth sailors:

This year we have a new approach for the 2008 Hobie season. We have established 4 events specifically designed for youth sailing of all ages and levels.
- Pot Holes Warm Up
- Youth Clinic
- Summer Celebration Youth Only
- Oktoberfest Youth Only
Parents - you hold the key to success for this plan, so please read on.

How many youth sailors do you think our Division has? 6? 10? Well with some very rough numbers based on my e-mail list - how about 40!!! Imagine 40 youths, of all ages, all skill levels on the water at a YOUTH ONLY event-with parents, and coaches as volunteers supporting the Youth events. The youths can sail on their own, do some exploring, make mistakes, without parental pressures, or get some sailing tips from the parents if they want. Make it fun – whatever their preferences are.

Pot Holes Warm Up - The first event will start April 4th-6th. A number of families are getting together at the Pot Holes State Park. While it’s going to be around 40 degrees where you are, Pot Holes will be around 70 degrees. In addition much warmer, pleasant weather, it has an expansive, beautiful lawn, great RV and tent camping. A number of the schools are on Spring Break at that time, so that's the reason behind the dates. We would like all families with youths, to come join us for a family weekend of sailing with the emphasis on the youths sailing and having a good time, instead of us adults hogging all the tiller time. Sail Sand Point has graciously agreed to provide us with 4 Hobie Waves. We will have other boats on the water as well for the youths to jump on and try out. It will be a totally informal family weekend - planned for the youths of all ages, and experience levels on the water.

Youth Clinic - May 10th will be a Youth Clinic at Sail Sand Point in Seattle, Washington. The format for this will be on the water coaching around buoys with friendly helpful hints. This is a one-day, informal, learning / fun event - no charge.
If the youths want to just sail around, that’s just dandy.

In addition, we’re going to be holding two YOUTH ONLY regattas. These two regattas will have fun sailing as well, so don’t think it’s all racing. The youth teams competing on the Hobie 16 will be scored based on their order of finish. This is going to be our method for determining the youth team that will represent our area in the US Sailing Youth Multi-hull Championships.

Summer Celebration Youth Event - July 26th and 27th is going to be a 2 day event held at Sail Sand Point Sailing Center in Seattle, Washington. We will have youths of all ages on the Hobie Waves, with potentially 20 Waves on the water hailing from as far away as Canada, Idaho, and Oregon and local sailors from Washington. In addition to the Hobie Waves, we will be racing on the Hobie 16 where point will be recorded toward the US Sailing Area L High Points youth champions.

Oktoberfest will be held at Sail Sand Point on September 27-28th. The Hobie 16 will once again be the platform for this regatta where points will be recorded toward the US Sailing Area L High Point youth champions. Yes – we know. How do you have an Oktoberfest in September. Let’s just all agree that its warmer in September and warmer is better!!!!

Thanks to Mike Hensel, with help from Don Atchley and Morgan Collins, we’ve lined up a number of learning / fun events for youths as well as a structured opportunities to identify our Area L youth champions.

The future is in the training and our youths. We hope that we can make this a friendly, fun, pressure-free atmosphere for the youths to explore the world of sailing. Many of the youths will become “cruisers”, some may become racers. All will be safer, and have more fun on the water having gone through the experience. It’s up to us to provide the training opportunities and to pass on what we’ve learned for future generations.

WOW! an honest to god program! Outstanding job!

IMO its useful to be clear what possible junior programs are shooting for.

We need to go to school on the west coast clubs!

Down the coast a bit you find the CISA organization which deals with the elite sailor.

their goal...

The program will consist of lectures and on-the-water drills including tactics, strategy, sail trim, boatspeed, etc., together with information on what is important for developing a successful Olympic campaign.
From the CISA web site CISA Mulitihull Clinic

These two kinds of programs complement each other and target differet groups of kids.

On the east coast...
I think the Syracuse sailors have a Jr sailing program going with similar goals as to the Division 4 program . (please chime in PatB)

I think the Key's have a program going using Waves. Again the goal is .... friendly and fun multihull sailing.

Do we need a CISA type organization and program on the east coast?
