Posts: 432 McCrae Y.C. Mornington Peninsu... | Hello All,
I have purchased some new carbon boards. Not sure if the $ spent will overcome the limitations of skill shortage but I figure it's important to look ones best, even if you are upside down.
Having never packed a case before I thought I'd consult the collective wisdom of the forum for some pointers.
My existing boards are also 10 inch so at first look, not much change seems to be required.
The cases are currently packed at the top and bottom only.I thought I should also take the opportunity to do some preventative sealing of the cases.
Questions:
What material to use for packing?
What is best for sealing the cases... the the paint is very thin in there suggesting it hasn't been looked at for quite some time.
Method to ensure all things are lined up as they should be.
Any suggestions for carpet/whatever for lining.
Should I put some lining inside the bottom of the case to protect the boards?
Comments gratefully received.
Cheers

I used closed cell (low moisture absorbsion) foam formed into wedges, wrapped them in fibreglass then used epoxy to glue the inserts to the fore and aft faces of the centreboard cases. Make sure that you allow for cured fibreglass thickness so that you can insert the wedges in the case and get the right depth.
Remember that the bottom rear edge of the case is probably the limiting constraint. Measure the existing draft angle of the rear case. Rule 5.11 states "The leading and trailing edges of the centreboard slots shall be parallel and within 10 degrees of the perpendicular from a straight line along the tops of the main and rear beams."
Maybe you already have these draft angles in which case you would only need to pack out the front as required and use thin wedges at the rear to ensure that the boards are kept in line with the hulls.
Check that your existing boards are centred in each hull. If they are correct then mark the front and rear edges on the hulls and deck. This will provide a reference for the new boards. It is critcal that the boards align correctly with the hulls.
If you are unsure about how much packing is required, make some temporary packing and see how it works.
I don't know much about the use of lining with carpet so I will leave that to others.

Peter

I've got a bit of left over foam I can bring along to the state titles even if you just use as a template then scrap it.
Weather forecast looks pretty bad this weekend. Don't think races will be run with 25 - 35 knots forecast on Saturday and not much better on Sunday.

Posts: 432 McCrae Y.C. Mornington Peninsu... | That would be great Peter, Thanks.
We sailed today... mostly 20-25 with the odd gust to 30.
Had a bit of trouble staying on the beast with the heavy seas but heaps of fun. You were right about that section for the tiller extension. If I didn't bend it today, I guess it's going to last awhile.
Cheers,

Posts: 432 McCrae Y.C. Mornington Peninsu... | Hi David,
Joseph at JK Fibreglass in Bendigo. 0402 456 743.
I gather he took over the foil side of things when Jim Boyer retired. Not really sure...others on here would know. The boards I got are 10inch and are the same as those Peter Cobden is putting on the new boats.
Cheers
