I've dispatched plans to 4 continents and 6 countries. I know RG has guys building in NZ and probably elsewhere. When I send my plans out I ask people to let me know when they start building so I can assign them a sail number. Before i do so I'd appreciate peoples thoughts on should we assign numbers globally as a class (my preferred solution) or should we let each design be numbered separately. RG I'd like to hear from you on this one, you've been very quiet recently (obviously busy). Given that this forum is a central communication tool I don't see any reason why we couldn't ask Mary to pin a sail number thread at the top allowing us to easily administer the number allocation process.

Thoughts?

I think if you want this to be a multi-design formula class, your preferred solution is the right one. OTOH, I don't recall if that issue was ever finally resolved across all the interested parties.

Like most classes, shouldn't we be allocating sail numbers with the national identifier first? whose design it is is irrelevant. Sail number thread here is fine with me.

Cheers
RG

Definateley want AUS etc but are you happy to handle each country seperately or do it in total. ie do we have and AUS 1 , NZ 1 and USA 1 or would they be AUS 1 , NZ 2 and USA 3 ?

I suggest the last one, following the Laser example, for two reasons:

1) It enables to know the aproximate age of a boat anywhere only checking its sail number.

2) The total number of boats made is always known and permanentely advertised in the sails.

I agree with this

How about we start here and then migrate to a dedicated tread when it becomes necessary?

Has anybody been in contact with Phill? Had the feeling he was going to start.

I spoke to Phill about a month ago and he suggested that for personal reasons his 12 was temporily on hold. If this is not the case I'm sure he'll chime in.

OK...have collected heaps of fees for the class now and a huge amount came in today, will start assigning sail numbers soon as a whole bunch are about to start being built. Basic numbers are:
China 38 round bilge design (commercial production)
Singapore 1 each of round bilge and hard chine
Thailand 1 round bilge
Hong Kong 2 hard chine
NZ 1 additional hard chine
Australia 4 hard chine and 1 round bilge
Switzerland 1 round bilge
UK 2 hard chine
and 9 others that are in the works and will announce countries later
Cheers
RG

I have started to build Nicks boat, and I think it would be nice to him (and me) to asign it a rather low sailnumber.
If things go on like this there will be 100 boats before X-mas <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

This is the type of trouble I like: no single digit numebrs available, hurry to get double digits while they are still available...

RG: the chinese like the numbers six, eight and nine. If you offer them the 60s, 80s and 90s instead of the sequential numbers they would be normally assigned, they will probably consider this a courtesy, a favor and an inteligent move. The double luck "88" could even be sold at a premium in China, as well as the combinations 66, 68, 69, 86, 89, 96, 98 and 99. It is also good for their marketing because it will seem that more boats have been built/sold already.

Congratulations!
