Set up the 5.8 for light wind yesterday. The jib leads were forward in the slide, when I looked at the video the foot was pretty loose when the jib was on hard up wind even though the telltales were flying okay. It got to about 13 knotts, 2 on the wire rarely flew the hull more than 4ft.
Is it more important to have the foot pulled tighter for shape or more important to have the high volume of air pushed through?
I've attached the only photo taken just after the start the jib wasn't fully on but was close. Were the ones at the back.
regards

Move the jib leads back usually in light air (wouldn't call 13 kts light air though, light usually refers to under 8 kts where its starting to go into laminar flow.). But if your jib is getting a little baggy could be hard to get it looking right. Where you passing people or getting passed?

From the pic (if I picked out the correct boat) your jib luff curve is not quite matched to you mainsail curve .... I would try moving your jib leads back slightly and if at 13knts of wind you are backwinding the mainsail, move the jib traveler out alittle to open the slot ... You are close through

Thanks guys it was only about 8 knotts when the photo was taken and then it just kept gradually building to 13. The main wasn't backwinding but I was slow which I put down to our weight until I saw the pics and video. The jib leads are on tracks on the hulls and only go for and aft, I had them as far forward as they would go which may have been too far. Do you point better with the jib leads further back even in light air?

Hi Jeff's

if you have a look at the modern 5.8's you will notice they don't have jib tracks anymore. instead they have alight-medium position and a heavy weather position.

the simple things often work the best. If you dont have access to a modern boat I can measure one for you. just let me know.

in the mean time this is how it should look:

Thanks Dazz I'd appreciate if you would measure it for me, mine is the only 5.8 I've seen except for pictures so I've got no idea. That foot in your post is nice and tight even in light wind and appears to be inside the hull. Does it have a wire across the tramp to bring the jib leads in? I'll work on the jib settings this weekend as the weather report seems to be more of the same.

No wire across the deck. in this picture you can see it more clearly.

We hardly ever moved them back unless it was blowing the dogs off the chains.

Will post tomorrow with measurements. also do you have a clew traveler or a clew board with holes?

Beautiful cat, what do your jib leads attatch to? I've got an old baggy main with a clew traveller and the newer one in the post that is fairly flat with holes for a hook. I had the hook in the middle hole.

The jib attaches to a saddle mounted on the deck on the tramp side of the hull. we had two saddles mounted at 107cm and 120cm from the main beam. many boats only have the one at 107cm.

I have an old Nacra 5.0 and would like to add another jib block saddle (eye strap?)for my new short-foot long-leach jib. How did you attach the saddle to the hull? Do you feel the hull is structurally sound enough to carry the load? Is there a backing plate under the deck lid? Bad news if it ripped out under load!

Am I missing something here? What is the skinny red line? If that's a barberhauler why is the cleat mounted on the low side and why doesn't the line run out to a block on the beam end? It must be someting else. I MUST have the wrong idea. What is that line?

My copy of your photo comes out tall and thin and you must scroll right to see the cleat I'm talking about.

here are some more pics of jack

yes that line is the barber hauler, yes it worked perfectly.

I cant be certain of a plate below the saddles because they were fitted at the factory. That boat is now 8 years old and the fittings did not move.
