Traditionally, the race starts just south of the Rickenbacker Causeway and proceeds directly to the Jewfish Creek area of Key Largo. All entrant boats include both monohulls and multihulls in various classes and must be greater than 14 feet in overall length. Racers always look forward to sailing in the Miami to Key Largo Race and, of course, to the party in Key Largo after it is over.
The race’s fastest elapsed time for a catamaran is 1 hour and 49 minutes, turned in by Captain Eric Roberts in a RC-27 in 1997, and the best ever elapsed time for a monohull was achieved by the late Captain Jim Williams in his famous Elysium in 3 hours and 23 minutes.(Copied from the Miami Yacht Club Site)for entry information go to miamiyachtclub.net

posting images isn't as intuitive as it used to be....click the hyperlink below the post entry box "File Manager". Upload your photo there and it will automatically appear in the post.

and heres the last of the trophy photos that I have. I have done this race 14 times. The format of 1 start for all the classes at 8:00 AM 120 boats on one long start line is just a spectacle not to be missed. Hope to see some of you there, any questions? unicorn@southflasailing.com

I'm suprised more northern Beach Cat Sailors don't come down for this one. I figure now that Randy Smyth doesnt do it every year, you might have a chance smile.

I've been warned away. Lot's of experienced distance racer don't recommend it for 16 foot boats or for those inexperienced in distance racing. Also, the logistics are bad for me.

Still, I don't want to throw cold water on you. I'm always looking for an excuse to sail in the Keys.

I'd be all about it if the timing wasn't so precarious with regards to spring fever or the T500.

Pete, I'm not sure why you'd be dissuaded from this race. Yes, it is logistically a bit more of a hassle than a bouy race, but the course itself is relatively sheltered (dare I say "inland") most of the course.

The several I had completed in the past were always fun, even the drifters, because of the huge participation.

One year I had someone drive the trailer down to Largo. Next year I sailed back up the next day. Once I set up in Largo, sailed to Miami (spent night in Miami) and raced back down.

One year I did round trip non-stop. (The non-stop route was most fun since you're picking through the mono fleet around the half-way point... smile )

The schedule of events makes this event fairly unfriendly to out of town teams.

Skipper's meeting the Thursday before, and the awards the weekend after.

Since I have limited time and money, this one finds itself lower on the my list. I've always enjoyed the sailing this run and it's tough to beat finishing in the Keys.

See, that's your problem... You're looking for the pickle platter!

I never attended the pre-race/post-race ceremonies. Showed up, sailed, grabbed a drink or two, and wandered off...

Maybe that's why it wasn't so traumatic for me?

We all have our favorites... wonder which ones are the worst?

Uh... no, if I was in it for the pickle dish I would have left the game a long time ago.

As I said I have a limited amount of time and money and this one just falls below the cut.

Jay, we can't all do every regatta.

Yeah Pete I did this race on my blade and it was a hoot. Others have done it on Hobie 16s, which is less buoyant than the blade.

Our multihull event on GYC falls on the same date, you are better off going to GYC, but not because of the boat. Your boat will do the race just fine.

Indeed hobie 16's are a big part of the race. And I've done the race in a Finn and once in a Laser I had a great time on both those trips, in the Finn I did it in 5 Hours which I felt pretty good about.

Maybe next year? This year conflicts with GYC Multihull, which is a big deal for us.
