Three days of racing and two separate courses. And is beautifully clear water, 15 mph winds and flat seas.

Jan 15-18 -- Tradewinds Midwinter Open Cat Nationals/NAMSA NAs, 3-days of racing (even if you can only make Sat/Sun, you will get scored your average for Friday). This is the biggest event of the winter. Also, F18 Midwinters, F16 Midwinters, Shark Midwinters, Wave National Series Regatta, Harken Buoy Series (1st for 2010 and Awards for 2009), rick@catsailor.com, 305-451-3287, For PreRegistration: http://www.catsailor.com/registration/ Here is the Notice of Race Info: http://www.catsailor.com/Tradewinds2010.html

Rick,

Your dates are Jan 15 - 18 .... which is Friday - Monday. Do you have anything planned for Monday or did you really mean 15-17?

We are definitely going to satisfy some of the complaints of running apples and oranges on the same course.
There are going to be two courses -- one, for the spin boats, A Cats, etc that like Windward/Leeward Courses, and a second for Waves, H16, and boats like that.
AND, since we don't have to get off races for so many classes, we can now use Rule 26 for starts, which is Class Flag at 5 min, Prep and 4, Prep down at 1, and Class down at start.
And now it is officially a three day regatta. If you cannot make it on Friday, your average scores for the rest of the weekend will be applied to the missing races on Friday.
Should be a great regatta.., and as you all know, we never have a shortage of wind. Can anyone remeber EVER having a drifter in the Keys?
Rick

not more than one or two races while the tradewind filled in.

It seems that at least one of the two days (Steeple, Tradewinds, etc) have more than enough wind, and one is lighter.

Quote
APPENDIX J
NOTICE OF RACE AND SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
See rules 89.2(a) and 90.2. The term ‘race’ includes a regatta or other series of races.
J1 NOTICE OF RACE CONTENTS
J1.1 The notice of race shall include the following information:
(1) the title, place and dates of the race and name of the organizing authority;
(2) that the race will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing;
(3) a list of any other documents that will govern the event (for example, The Equipment Rules of Sailing, to the extent that they apply), stating where or how each document or a copy of
it may be seen;
(4) the classes to race, any handicap or rating system that will be used and the classes to which it will apply, conditions of entry and any restrictions on entries;
(5) the times of registration and warning signals for the practice race, if one is scheduled, and the first race, and succeeding races if known.

C'mon Rick, there's only 5 things that have to be in an NOR and you missed 4 of them.

Who's the organizing authority? (See Rule 89 for definition and requirements.)

Under what rules will you be racing?

What other documents apply? Class rules for boats racing one-design?

What classes will be racing and what handicap system will be used? Are there any restrictions on racing?

First flag? What's that? Do you mean the warning signal? (I'm giving you this one.)

The days are long gone where you can just throw up a flyer and say "Let's have a cat race!" You need to be better organized.

Ouch, I'm guessing Matt's not comming?

;^)

What we really need to know is, where is Tom Korz going to have his rolling party bus parked?

Rick,
Thanks for working to make the event better this year.
2 courses, 5 minute starts, and 3 days all make me want to try much harder to get to this event.
We are hoping to do both but Steeplechase was the priority as you sail the race no matter what. With 3 days of racing at tradewinds we can afford to allow one to get blown out.
Looking forward to seeing you down there... I think you can expect 3-6 boat from the New England fleet. After a busy summer we are all hurting a bit financially... including me but as always want to do some winter sailing in they keys.

DING DING DING

but heck... I only bitch about the lack of class designations.

For pete's sake... you know what fleets you had last year... What's changed to lead you to believe that more or less will show up?

If a class fronts up two weeks before the event and says... We have polled the members and promise 10 boats and expect 15... change your NOR and publicize the change.. Otherwise, how hard is it to publish last years racing fleets as this years NOR Fleets?

The NOR is a lot like a contract...You spell it out... the invited classes are expected to deliver sailors. When both sides deliver... everybody is happy!

All Classes are invited. In the NOR I mentioned the classes that are having either their midwinters, or of major series.

F18's will be there. At a minimum it will be the same number as last year, but probably more.

Great. Last year they were the biggest class and won the Calton Tucker Memorial for the winner of the largest class. The year before it was the Hobie 16s. Both years the Wave ended up just one boat short of winning it.
Great to see such turnouts of so many great classes.

The H16s will be there, hopefully with 2008 like numbers....but should be at least as many as last year.

There is a headline story on the Welcome Page (Headline Page) or www.catsailor.com, but when you come straight to the Forum you miss all the regatta reports. Here is the link:

The NOR for the Tradewinds has lodging info.'

F18 participation update, in addition to the 6 on the board, I have verbal commitments from 3 more and another 4 that are probables for a total of 13. We could easily have a 15 boat F18 fleet for this event. Oh, and it's talent STACKED, so you will want to bring your A game.

The new format does appear to agree with people. 12 F18's on the board and I'm working on 5 more, if Tradewinds get's any of the Steeplechase weather the racing is going to be outstanding.

Actually 7. I'm registered with the FXone, but I will be sailing the Viper. Prepare for failures! That first weekend on a new boat is always a tradgedy.

Actually, getting into Tampa Tuesday sometime. the rest of Tuesday and Wednesday will be spent putting it together. Its sitting in boxes at the moment. Thursday we're going to head down to the keys, and go for a shakedown sail.

I can not wait to get out of this frozen hell hole.

I don't know, it is going to be a pretty tall order to better the crash from a couple years ago. - Broken bows, busted tow boat, torn up sails, a trip to the Hospital......

About the only way to beat all that is to finally get one of those 20's to take out a Wave. laugh

Technically

I didn't go to the hospital.

I did go to the docs and he said I had a small rib crack. Ouchies. No wonder my insurance company wants to find out more about my visits to my sports med doc! :P

Didn't Ryan Ranger send his crew to the hospital and split his N6.0 hull down the entire length of the middle at one Tradewinds? And it wasn't that windy... Maybe 18 kts...

Are we seeing a trend here?

Having officially been granted a kitchen pass for this event, I am working on accommodations and would like to know if anyone is interested in splitting a room with me. Will most likely arrive Thursday night and leave Sunday afternoon.

PM me if interested.

Jake,
You took the words right out of my mouth. Single digits, foot of snow (more with drifting), and 40 mph winds... counting down days till I'm hoping on a plane for this one.

Screw all of you "Oh its XX*F" people!!!

It was -29*F this morning. It never got above zero today. Statistically it should get colder the next few weeks.

BUT!!! In about 97 hours my skinny butt is gettin' in a truck for florida. I'm excited, pumped, stoked, jacked, hyper, and ready to roll.

So Rick, what's the overnight low in Key Largo tonight??

It's supposed to get down to 27 here in Sebring but we are not surrounded by the warm water like you are. Tampa news said the Gulf water is down to 61, what's the water temp in the Keys right now?

I left NH to get away from this crap! Well, at least I don't have to shovel the driveway...yet.

Guess I'd better make sure there's no water in my hulls though, it might freeze up and split them.

Here's Key Largo's weather, be sure you scroll down to the bottom.

http://www.weather.com/weather/local/USFL0243?lswe=Key%20Largo%20FL&from=searchbox_localwx

If you are too lazy to copy that, tonight's low in Key Largo is supposed to be about 40.

You can get lost now.

I'm not as nearly bad as Karl, but it was 5 above this AM. High today was about 15. Good day to find air leaks around the house (just hold you hand next to an outlet, etc. to feel for a draft). I'm on the warpath to cut down my heating bills (December gas bill was ~$350).

The spousal unit was not too happy when I got aggressive with the programmable thermostats. laugh

Noah has the water at 58.5( http://tidesonline.nos.noaa.gov/plotcomp.shtml?station_info=8726724+Clearwater+Beach,+FL#) at the clearwater pier

I sailed on dec 31.. it was 61* water... it only felt cold until my feet turned blue .. actually it was fine with the right gear.

Played tennis this morning in temps around the mid-60s. It was pretty miserable. Tomorrow is supposed to get colder, so may opt out of tennis.
Supposed to stay that way until about Friday when it will get over 70 again.
Bet is will affect the water temps a bit, but should be better than Minn. I couldn't believe the temps were in the -29 area all over the northern plains, and that was not wind chill.

Enjoying this global warming?

Rick

Get yourself a wood-burning stove or at least a fireplace insert. I have the latter, and unless it gets below 10 degrees outside, the furnace never comes on when I have the wood going. Even when it is that cold, the furnace runs much less often than it does without the wood going.

Also helps that I get free wood from the in-laws (just have to cut, haul and split it), but it's good exercise (and we all know I could use some more of that to help my boatspeed)...

well, well guys you have problems - we don't even think about sailing cry

The actual temperature at the lake of Thune in Switzerland is -3 degree celsius which is about 27 F. Water temperature is 6 degree celsius (43F). Look below how it looks like. Do you wana sail in front of snowy mountains?

Check out the live cam, but think about the time shift, we are 6 hours ahead, on http://www.swiss-sail.ch/webcam00.htm

Not going to work in this house (4,125 sq. ft, including the semi-finished basement). We have two furnaces - one in the basement and one in the attic. Both are +90 efficiency. Basement furnace takes the brunt of the load, since the warm air rises up to the second floor via the "grand entrance" foyer (14 ft ceiling). Yesterday, it ran 10 hrs 50 min when it was ~21°F outside.

That's assuming you haven't already eaten the dog.

you crack open the door, shooo the dog out with your foot, and wait 20 seconds for the "WOOF! MOTHER F'ER!" and crack the door back open to let them back in. You don't need a leash and you don't need to walk them...they're not going to stray far! I lived in Cleveland for 10 years.

Hi Martin,
When I did one of my Sailing Seminars in Munich in late April it was pretty neat sailing in front of the snow-covered Alps. Temps were pretty nice, but the water was VERY, VERY cold. And the lake was extremely deep. And I was recovering from a hernia operation.
So, instead of letting out 150' or more of anchor rode for each mark, I just put the marks in without anchors. Funny, they all drifted relatively at the same speed. That kept me from freezing my hands, tearing up my hernia, etc. while hauling up hundreds and hundreds of line.
But, it was beautiful.
Rick

When it is cold like this, Cody, my 70 lb Golden crawls up on my lap, cuddles up and sleeps while I read the morning paper.
Won't do that if it is warm weather, however.
Pretty funny,

Our dog used to use the cat box in extreme cold events up north. I do not normally approve of this activity because the dog searches for "kitty box crunchies" while using the box (not to mention the cat gets REALLY miffed at someone using her box)

Thankfully, it never gets that cold down here, although I did have to scrape ice off the windshield of my car this morning (not really ice, probably just heavy frost, but STILL this is SW FL for pete's sake!)

If you want TMI, I'm stuck in a nieghborhood, city, and county where the ordinance is to clean up after your pet. This little item does not endear me to the concept of dog ownership (especially large dogs who poop the size of a sofa), but it wasn't my choice to begin with (spouse rules).

But, I clean up after kids which at times can be worse than what a pet can lay down....

I know of a girl who would like to get down there from Charleston. Anyone have room for a mid-twenties blond to make the drive with you? (But she's with me if/when she gets there).

Apparently. I made the mistake of posting those pics on my Facebook page and making them public, when all I wanted was a place to upload them and hotlink them here. Anyway, I stuck my thumb in the business end of a tablesaw. Took me 12 years to finally do it, I've been mauled by virtually everysingle piece of equipment there is but the tablesaw. I was being stupid, plain and simple. What I was doing was not really that dangerous, I've done it a million times before, but I've been working alot of hours lately trying to get a big job delivered before I go, to much stuff on my mind and I just wasn't paying attention 100% and I got bit.

This is the worst injury I've ever had in woodworking
1. Tablesaw - Mauled thumb
2. Bandsaw- Mauled the same thumb, kinda pissed cause that scar is gone forever now.
3. Run a chisel all the way through one of my fingers once. (Awesome scar)
4. Got my hand caught in a pnuematic clamp for assembling doors. Tore all of the skin off the side of my right hand. I almost passed out that hurt so bad. Hardly any blood, no trophy.
5. Filleted the back of a finger at the 2nd knuckle once with a coping saw. Bled and hurt like a bastard.
6. Rammed my hand backwards into the backside of a countertop at the shop that was uber sharp. Painful, bled alot, left an okay scar.

I've got alot of badass, well earned scars from motorcycles too.

The very first thing that went throw my mind was: "Oh sweet ****ing christ! I just knocked my ****ing thumb off." After I looked and saw it still attached the second thing that went through my mind was: "Oh kiss me! I'm leaving for Florida Monday! kiss!!"

I'm soooo glad I'm doing this with crew. It wouldn't be possible to single hand a spin boat with a thumb on the disabled list.

Anybody got advice on keeping this thing from getting infected whilst on the boat next weekend? I'm gonna be on the water probably 5 days straight.

There is nothing like a good dose of Keys salt water to help heal a wound like that.(as long as you stay away from coral) As a matter of fact, it might even help with your "feel" on the tiller since you will have to relax your grip. Come on down and get better at Tradewinds!

Ditto what he said Karl. You may want to duct tape a piece of rag over it to keep the raw part from hurting so bad. Don't tell your doctor about it though. You may need a little rum now and then for pain, but the salt water will be good for it.

I will be sure to carry duct tape and bactroban on the Sea Ray if you need to re-apply during the race.

We have been talking to the guy at Pussers Rum to set up his display and have shots one evening. Don't know if he will show, but we are trying to get him there.

Karl, i had an infection on a foot from a small cut ( i think i got bacteria in it from caladisi island where birds hang out) .. this one got serious. i had fevers, night sweats that soaked my bed and sheets and chills that almost vibrated me off the bed (dispite all the antibiotics i was on). I learned that a skin infection can spread to your blood... brain... etc.. can be lethal.

The good news is your thumb can be covered / proteceted alot easier than a foot (that gets wet when getting on and off a boat). there is a googlezillion of different bacteria in sea water so dont think that salt water is good for your thumb.

If i were you.. i would consider packing your thumb with antibacterial jell (neosporin). and wearing a surgical glove or at the least a thumb section to not allow crud in (taped shut). I would also wear new (sailing) gloves (avoiding bacteria in your old ones) maybe bring a few pair.

keep that hand out of the water... and i would think you should be good to go.

Disclaimer: i am not a doctor.. but i do live near a holiday inn

Last February I broke my wrist and had to wear a cast. So, for sailing I bought a rubber cast cover. It fit pretty tight, but then you pump the air out of it and I could still take a jacuzzi and sail.
Still have it around here somewhere, if you want to borrow it. It will definitely keep your thumb dry.

There is heat at the end of the tunnel. Weather is supposed to be back to normal next weekend for Tradewinds, with temps in the upper 70's. Hooray!!

It'll be cool this year.

I've had a lot of practice on the boat since that ill-fated journey.

To whom it may concern:

If Thaddeus J. Pecorak shows up with any sort of "mankini" or any other inappropriate clothing (as deemed by Todd Hart), I will leave his butt in FL and will donate his boat to BoatAngel.

That is all.

4 F16's and 3 F18's are rigged and ready and we've already invaded the Tradewinds Pizza hangout, where are the rest of you?

Weather forcast looks very very good and I highly recommend you steel a day or two and get down here early. Between the A cat sailors and the Tradewinds early birds there is already a decent crowd. However, the local crews union is starting to get a bit uppity.

Sometimes it's good to me.
