G'day my Jib on the 5.7 has a luff in it just behind where it zips onto the forestay even when going upwind fully on. The jib leads attach to the tramp so I havn't been able to play with that setting. Does this mean the jib has had it? Would sewing another patch on the tramp to pull it back fix it? This seems doubtfull to me as It's under heaps of load at the moment.
Thanks in advance for your advice and hope you had a safe Christmas

It sounds like the jib is probably blown out. Moving the sheeting position for and aft adjusts the leech and foot tension, but not much with the luff. Sorry for the short reply, on my phone headed to a family Christmas function.

Jeff,
When you say your jib has a luff in it - do you mean it is luffing or developing a knuckle in the cloth that is not filling just behind the forestay?

It can be caused by forestay sag, or the jib not being cut for the amount of forestay sag that is created when under load. Rigging the boat a little tighter may help as can a little more luff tension.
If you are rigging the boat tightly then check the dolphin striker and make sure it is tight and deflecting the main beam up a little when the boat is not rigged.
If you want to move the sheeting position of the jib back and can't, raking the mast back will change the balance between leach tension and foot tension a little.
I doubt the mast rake will fix the problem but without seeing can't know. It would give you something to play with that may help you work out the sollution.
Regards,
Phill

Thanks for the replies the jib has a ripple in it from the bottom to three quarters up just behind the zipper where it doesnt fill and it would be disrupting the air flow. I've tried mast rake and jib tension.

Go for a bit more pre-bend in the forestay!

"pre-bend in the forestay!"
I'm having a hard time visualizing this. How do you pre-bend the forestay?

I presume that the jib luff isn't just too tight !

I've tried letting the luff off and pulling it on harder

Hi Jeff,

I had a similar problem... seems to be sorted now... I have started footing off a little more upwind (rather than pinching) and the jib is really cranked on once we get moving!

They can lose their shape fairly quickly if left flogging on the beach etc as well, so that always a possibility!

Catch you soon, Mitch

G'day MItch I got Liz to pull it on so hard in good wind when we last sailed 2 weeks ago that we ripped a 2ft hole in the tramp which got me thinking about getting another sheeting point in the tramp during the repair. I never let my sails flog, my other jibs don't have the problem but I like the look of this jib with the main and would love to sort it out. Good luck with your Nats I wish I was going.
regards

How do you know it is even a problem? Maybe it actually works better that way, even though you don't like the looks of it.

Now thats a good question, it doesn't look right to have a knuckle in the sail but what would I know.

There should be no abrupt changes in the shape of the sail. Smooth entry all the way through to a smooth exit. Anything else is less efficient.

Where are you Jeffs? We are at the taipan/cap nationals in paynsville. We have had some top sailing so far. Greg Goodall and Brett have given us plenty of tuning help.

I'm at Kingston SE South Australia. I know I should be there I was going to do the Stingray Nationals so that my kids could do the Arrow and Arafura Nats at the same time but then there wasn't enough people left here to run our learn to sail program and we've ended up doing nothing. Evan Steele knows how pissed off I am. Evans coming to our regatta on the 9th of Jan why dont you all follow him here, last year was a 15km spin run on flat water with 2 on the wire at times. You can all stay at my house all 200 of you.
