Hello all, we sailed the Rum Race today, results below, moderate wind and seas. Had close racing with the Hallsworths on Young Mariner. We missed the mark at Port Elliot and had a relatively slow downwind to find it, those behind us went straight to it. Sh*t happens. Peter and Simons results should improve to third when they fix the results, (no spinnaker).

Hi Darryn,

Well done. I expect that the results would only have been better if you could set a straight course.

Those Arrows are certainly pesky in the right conditions. cry Good to see you kept the F16s at bay. cool

Regards,

Peter

Nice result Darryn,

And ditto Peter's comment smile

I noticed when checking how many Mozzies raced there is a Westernport boat on the list showing DNS. By my count that's 2 boats headed over the border in the last few weeks. Are they additions to the SA fleet or just people updating?

Cheers

Additions actually, Zapper went to a new sailor who spent a couple of seasons of torture on a Hobie 14 before upgrading to the Mozzie. The other I have no details of apart from being told we have another Vic boat coming too our fleet with a new sailor.

Fleet is growing over here with unused boats appearing out of sheds almost every time we go racing.

Nice result Darren. What about the carnage on the beach with those waves rolling up, a Hobie Tiger smashed the bow on the blue Mozzie while it was pulled all the way up to the bushes, thats 20ft from the waterline and 5ft above it I saw two dinghys get rolled and wrap their masts up and heard of another one. Johnny Beakin on his A class got thrown off the back when he rounded up, Liz dragged his boat up the beach with him after it was dumped on the beach backwards no damage luckily. That rounding mark was a lot further away from the finish line than last year so we went too high by miles

The carnage was just terrible to watch. I think it was a Hobie 18 that took out the front of Roys Mozzie which being two feet further down the beach then my boat took the full brunt of a heavy solid catamaran being washed sideways up the beach. I wonder what kind of sailor parks there boat sideways onto the waves in front of boats which are obviously still being hit by waves when there is kilometres of vacant beach either side. Guess he was "having a Hobie Day" as there advertising promotes.

I thought the course was bit different too but, apart from the beach break, you couldn't get a more perfect day for sailing the Rum race.

I really enjoyed the day, Liz didn't want the spin up so we didn't use it. We did 7 hours of driving for a bit over an hours racing and it was worth every minute.

Having a "Hobie Day". Have to add this on the "to do list"
Shame ,really, as the Rum Race was brilliant with good breeze, big swells, sun etc.
cheers,

Lucky it hit your boat Roy. If it hit Darrens he'd still be laying on his face on the beach kicking and screaming grin.

Hi all,

great to see so many cats for a race in S.A. smile that would be the largest fleet for a while wouldn't it?

Good to hear the Mossie Fleet is growing felt very guilty helping 4 boats come out of S.A. last winter, good to see some balancing up happening. grin Seeing as the Nationals are west side of Melbourne, hope to see lots of S.A. boats there. cool

Also good to see Tony Barrett first home on Blade F16, beating faster rated cats. wink

Prior to the Rum Race start I was able to get some shots of part of the fleet, was way too busy after the start!

Good to see Fantasia being put to use by its new owner Brian! First Stingray to compete in a club race in SA for a few years I'll bet! Very nice platform that one... don't ask how I know!

We have two here at Kingston. I saw Brian getting on the water but didn't get a chance to catch up with him

Very funny but I wouldn't have directed my frustration at the beach which had done nothing wrong, go straight to the source I say.

A few years back Bullet was T boned by another Mozzie at Victor Harbour. I put the boat on its side in the back yard to fix it and the satelite took a picture. Mozzie repairs photographed from space. Link below, which doesn't work for some reason so copy and paste
