Wow
Take a look at the 505 Worlds Home Page 505 Worlds coming up. The SAS analysis looks very promising and you could really learn some sailing tactics watching!

Nice Video.....
A Cat Sailor Macey Nelson's true love is the 505 and he and his normal crew (Parry Barclay... recent NA champion crew) are giving it a go.... Lots of USA boats in Denmark.

Should set the bar for Race coverage.

Thanks Mark. Very nice video indeed.

Do you know who produced it and what the production costs were?

I’m willing to bet that Hasso just writes a check and tells them to pull out all the stops.

They are promising to have three journalist commentators/tweeters on course as well as an unknown number of video cameras, live tracking and social media site coverage including facebook.

Some pretty impressive sponsorship with the Danish government event management body so they should have the cash and staffing to do a professional job.

What I am interesteed in finding out the technology so it can be adopted worldwide so events such as the A class and F18 worlds get the media and public attention they deserve.

Does anyone have a contact at the 505's so we can find out what cameras they've got, the staffing and set up of their media centre.

Does anyone have a contact there we can grill for details?

So far so good, in fact brilliant coverage.

Website is up to date with a good article on the heavy conditions and boat damages experienced on the first day, post race interview with front runner and repeats of boat tracking.

Below comment from a website article sums the media muscle backing the event.

"One thing that has changed since 1978 is the level of media coverage and publicity surrounding the 505 Worlds. With class sponsor, the global software company SAP working closely with the University of Aarhus, there is a plethora of new technology being used to follow every moment of the racing. All boats will be carrying GPS transponders for the live tracking, and six boats will also be carrying cameras on their transoms, generating live footage that will be streaming on the internet. So will having a live camera on board affect the Bojsen-Møller brothers’ performance? “No, not at all,” says Jacob, “except maybe when we want to go to the toilet.”

Nice!

The reporter, Pip, is terrific...

I love the decision to bring some of the class's history back and interview the class legends. ... and I have no idea who these guys are!

We should go to school on this.... The old classes have history that the current group of sailors would love to hear from.

I can't follow the tracking. I keep getting a flag that there is a security risk.

The combination of the tracking and video feed running in audio and small screen is a great big picture view...

When you want to follow the boat handling... you go to full screen on the video.

With 100 plus boats on the course... you can't focus on more then 5 or 6 in the lead with the video/audio but with a gps on everyone's boat... you can follow your bud's and see what's going on back in the pack.

For a sailboat race... this idea of multiple independent views... Tracking, video and leader board is the way to go.

I watched race 5 all the way through. (I don't think I have ever watched a sailboat race start to finish... not even the ACC races.

About the only thing they could add to picture would be a weather buoy information on the course which overlayed windspeed and direction on the gps tracks at several positions on the race course...

Now THAT would be cool!.... Seeing pressure and direction shift over time would make post race analysis definitive.

To a non sailor... They probably can't figure out the wind thing..... It probably looks like dumb luck out there.

RICM wrote in another thread on media campaigns.

Quote
I think it's an open question as to the value of a big PR campaign for your class.

The way I look at it the No. 1 target for a classes event PR are the people at the event, then the freinds and family of the people at the event, then the people in the class who wish they where at the event. If you can get these people talking about the event and class their enthusiasm will draw other people in.

The best peice of PR you can do is get the results up really fast. Preferably at the end of each race.

What gets me is how neglected the run up to the event tends to be. It's way more important than the write up of racing at the end. Who is sailing with who, what gear they are using. Who the favorates are. What the conditions at the venue are like. There's a load of stuff to prattle on about that's of dirrect interest to the people who will be most interested. Bumping up the anticipation adds to the enjoyment for every one and gets people talking. Keep the class and the event in the forfront of peoples mind with short but frequent comunication using the apropriate channel. Different frequencies for different channels. We try and send out an email on something every 2 weeks from Feb through to the end of October, and post something on Facebook every week.

Ask for opinion and feedback on key decissions. Offer options. 99% of the time no one will reply and you have to drive it your self but people know that they are being informed and consulted and it gives them ownership.

After the event the most important thing is photos. Then the three standard write ups: summary of the racing (mention as many people as possable, particularly having a stand out performance), summary of the social (keep it clean!) and what the champion did (opinion on stratergy, disclosure of settings and gear).
RICM

Well said.
