You see the violence inherent in the system?

I currently run a sailboat dealership... I sell cats only, not kayaks, not sups. I have been in business for 9 years. I have steadily seen my profits fall since 2008 and now they are going back up a little at a time (if Obama wins the next election I probably will think about closing). I am in a northern state so my season runs May 1 - Sept. 1 so it’s kind of short. So I have reduced my cost drastically and am in a small store (have to have a store front to be a dealer). I also sell used sailboats, not just cats. I sell parts and accessories for all types of trailer-able sailboats. However I am also employed as a counselor so when in the off season I work more and then in the in season I work less at my place of employment. I have found a nice balance and feel lucky to be able to do what I love. So my key to success is one have an extremely positive attitude; sell the best products; have a website/blogsite (will soon have a new online store); keep costs down via small economical store, etc.; Go mobile; run a sailing school; and do a lot in your community to promote your business such as free sailing days for youth and adults, demos, etc.; support the local clubs (I created my own club), etc. Also I created a site that give info about all things boating… such as boat launches, access points, water conditions, etc. This site gives me free advertising and now I am getting advertising dollars from other businesses to be on my site. I have found balance for my business, family, and self. So to be successful you need to find the right balance which is no small accomplishment.
