Some fun with numbers...

Look at the sheet again. I added a "percentage of best" column to the length, beam, mast, sail, and weight. The biggest is considered best except in weight. I excluded spinnaker since all do not carry them. I also added an average of those numbers for each boat.

I am not really sure what it means, but interesting to look at. Presumably, the highest percentage average is "better".

Mike Teets

I would however split up sailarea into jib area and mainsail area, because both sails act differently. Example when a catrigged and sloop designs have equal sailarea's than teh catrigged boat will do slightly better upwind but the sloop will do much better downwind to such a magnitude that it more than compensates for it's loss uwind. Only exception to this is really light air where the possibly higher rig of the catrigged boat is much favored.

I agree but I don't have all of the jib/main sizes so I cannot do it against all boats.

Also, would like to get accurate numbers on EU vs.NA on 6.0 and I20. Is the Fox the same?

Mike Teets
Best is when you look at www.texelrating.knwv.nl
for data on sail sizes.

Better get the correct numbers first

The Mystere 6.0 is exactly 8 feet 9 inches BOA and about 19 feet 9 inches LOA when measured properly. The boat weight is all over the place with the latest boats reported under 400 pounds. So much for one design or fair racing.

The last time I measured a Tornado mast it was 32 feet with a boat weight of 350 pounds. I think these are some of the B-class rules which the Tornado(old) is.

The iF20 rules state a max LOA of 6.12m not 6.10m. This is just under 20 feet 1 inch. Since many boats have been built under that rule, it should also stand for NA - F20. Since the Fox and I20 hulls are iF20 class legal, they may also measure nearer to 20 feet 1 inch LOA. Factory specs are not to be trusted for the purpose of comparing makes and models.

St. Louis, MO,
Mark,

I couldn't agree more. We need to throw the Manufactures specs in the trash as our first item. I don't know where they measured my H20 but It is no where near their measurement. We need to independently measure all boats and sails.

Texel info is probably a fair source.

I would be glad to keep a manufacture table and a measured table... but unfortunately I don't own one of each boat to measure although I will run that past my wife tonight... wish me luck.

Mike Teets
