How much did you pay for your New Hobie 16 and what year was it.
I've been told someone was quoted $9,000, sounds way high to me.
I think I paid around $7,000 for a new 2002

I found some prices on the internet. I'm sure you should take off about 10% after hagling.

Hi Tempo Sails and Ski in MInniapolis,MN,were giving special deals to racers.I think it was $6900 for a 2004.
Is a new boat a " must" or "just nice to have" ,to compete at nationals level

I'd say a new boat is mostly nice to have.
I know when I bought a new boat it was because I wanted new sails and a new tramp and when I started adding up the cost it wasn't going to be much more for a whole new boat.

My '98 (bought new from Boatworks in SYR) was $6,500, fully tricked out (racer rudders, trapeze systems, Harken mainsheet system). This stuff is standard on the new boats now.

I've recently heard (from Matt Miller) that the suggested retail price of a Hobie 16 SE (white sails) is about $8,300.

Just to let you know, we do not allow ads for boats on the Forums and do have a great Classified Ads Page that really gets results.., and for only $10 for 25 words, where it is on the site h ere (getting 3 Milliion his per month) and will also be in the hard cover monthly magazine.

If it is an ad, I will have to remove it.
Thanks for understanding,
Rick

Rick, your "Decent Sailor" title cracks me up. [Linked Image] I finished your book recently and will have to re-read it when spring comes along. Be sure to alert us if one of your sailing seminars comes to west TX in the next 2-3 years! [Linked Image]

Warm regards, Jim

$3,900 in 1984 = $7,169 in 2004
(according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator)

Why are they £6950.00 GBP in the UK (Jan 7th 2005 Yachts and Yachting). That equals, at today's rate, $12,892.46 USD and Euro 10,087.27.

You're contributing to the John Dinsdale (President, Hobie Cat Europe) retirement fund

What most people are leaving out is the sales tax that is charged in most US states. In Michigan, it's 6%, but in some states, it's considerably higher.

Still a bargain compared to what they want for it in Europe.

I don’t think you need to pay sales tax if you take delivery across state lines.

Sales tax/use tax is very complicated and variable by the state in which the boat is purchased and the state in which the boat is registered. Between the 50 states, the variations are almost infinite. Generaly, sales tax is due in the purchase state. Some states (e.g. MD) will waive sales tax if you agree to remove the boat from the state within (I think) 30 days. When you go to register the boat (if required), that state will levy a use tax. Any previously paid sales tax is credited against the use tax. I guess you can "beat the system" if you were to purchase a Hobie in a no sales tax state (DE) and use it in a no registration state (VA, for sail-only boats under 22 LOA). If you want the nitty-gritty in your state, you could ask a keel boat or power boat dealer as they deal with this crap all the time.

You are obligated to pay sales tax in your own state if you take delivery across state lines, although most people rarely do.

Not that I would know about this from personal experience.

Same with purchases over the Internet. If the vendor does not collect sales tax, we're supposed to be good citizens and report (and pay) the "use tax" on our state income tax forms. (At least that's the way it's done in Michigan.)

I bought my boat in iowa where the sales tax is 6% When I registered the boat in minnesota (6.5% sales tax) the state wanted the last .5%. What a crock! it was like $30 but I kept fighting it and finally lost. And $7300 for my 06'

I'm boatless.
