-The more I re read posts ,the more I understand human bias ,individual perspective and various interpretation of fair sailing .

I coach B -Ball for kids and have the last 5 seasons ,-we are assigned at random teams of kids generally 8 per team -12 teams in all in our area, of all sizes and skills ,-all kids are required by rules to play equal amounts of time .

-Realizing sailing should be the same ,and there is no real way to equalize human elements ,--this is the basis of sport ,and the human drama ,-to overcome such percieved obsticles of life.

-Team choice of size weight etc and its effects should be made by the TEAM involved without some expected compensation of rated time or sail .If you don,t like your team ,--then change it ,it is a matter of individual choice.

That leaves boat weight variation ,--again an existing set of conditions ,-we have 30 and 60 LB variables between designs . A sail area to weight ratio is the only tool we have available , We have Length , and Beam the same and weight to sail area within a reasonable rated area of similar performance .

If all 20 ft 8.5 beam cats of similar weight to sail area ratios were rated under pORTHMOUTH ,-ISAF for Cats ,-or Texel ,or even a designer performance program annalysis ,-would expect all to rate within seconds per hour of each other ,--believe this is enough for the basis of an OPEN FORMULA 20 CLASS ,--if the desire of racing sailors is there among existing and future 20 ft cat owners .

-Happy Holidays ,-& Happy Catsailing New Year

reviewing the 3 catagories of boat weights are those over 410 --over 380 --and over 350 ,--with a potential future catagory of 320 LB .--30 LB increments

-Sail areas used in Other Formula Classes are an approximate 20 sq ft of spin area in 30 LB s -though crew weight ,-along with 6.5 sq ft of jib . In the generally breezier conditions in Europe this seems to be favoring heavier total weight . -

We wish to apply this to boat weight only and include a progression in the main as well in average lighter conditions .

-An estimated average as with all ratings ,-of 20 spin -8 main --prelim numbers -giving some favoritism similarly to existing older heavier designs , hopefully keeping them competitive ,particularly in light air .

Catagory #1 -boat weight 410 LB -spin 300 -main 216

Catagory #2-boat weight 380 LB -spin 280-208

Catagory #3boat weight 350LB -spin 260 -main 200 -

believe these are close but not perfected yet ,-this is the basis of the open 20 Formula Class with simplified rules from there .

Happy Holidays -

Carl
