I had a pair of H14 hulls that had soft spots so I cut them up today for disposal. They had matching 1979 hull numbers, but the interior foam blocks were completely different. One was a two piece type that matched the shape of the hull pretty good. The other hull had a squarish block in it which was tapered at each end. The hulls haven't been in the water for 15 years, but there was some moisture from condensation inside. The lower block of the hull shaped foam probably weighed 10 lbs, as it was completely waterlogged. Here's a couple photos.
BTW: A reciprocating saw with a coarse metal blade cuts through Hobie hulls like butter.

Jack, you should donate those hull pieces as possible trophies for the Hobie 14 Nationals (North Americans?). I'm serious!

I'd be glad to donate them, but how are they going to get out to Iowa for someone to prep them for presentation?

Contact the HCA and ask if they want them to use for trophies. If they have any creative instincts, they will. So tell them you can stuff them into some boxes and find out what the UPS ground shipping charges will be. They send you the shipping money, and you ship them to HCA (or whoever the regatta organizers are).

I'm picturing the two pointy ends being for 1st and 2nd place and the two transom ends being for last and second to last, and the others for 3rd through whatever.

My ideas about trophies are sometimes a bit weird, but I think that if I were a Hobie 14 sailor, it would be neat to win a piece of an ancient Hobie 14 as memorabilia, since they don't make them any more.

I would have taken the bows and mounted them on the wall so it looked like the wind had punched them in from the outside.

JM, not to rag on you, but I think a "free to a good home, you must pick up" ad would've been a greater public service, ESPECIALLY since they're out of production. I know at least one FL sailor who needs a port hull... similar folks everywhere.

Soft spots are the norm on those hulls, and easily repaired.

PS: What did that ugly color start out as?

Actually, these hulls were on some classified ads for free a couple times over the last 3 or 4 years. One hull might of been repairable, but the other had a whole side that had delaminated. I picked up 3 sets of hulls that had been stored outside for many years, but weren't used much before storage. Bill Jefferys (spelling?) has won a couple events on one set of those hulls, but these were in contact with the ground and the moisture was very hard on them. I think they were a creamy tan color originally.

Speaking of differences in hulls: My '77 H-16 has identical hull numbers. The hulls are yellow, but age has taken a toll and the paint has faded, But the strange thing is one hull has drastically faded and the other has faded only a bit, It now looks like I have two different colored hulls. One a bright yellow, and the other a subtle yellow-tinged cream color. My compulsive neatnick neighbor can't stand it and keeps telling me to paint the boat.

I'm guessing the hulls got caught up in a pigment change at the factory, and the inventory system that manages the match-up of left and right hulls allows for vastly different dates of manufacture of the two hulls. That would explain the foam differences, too.

Jack: The bows make nice driveway markers.
Old hulls are also great for bars.
Your the one to blame for Billy being so fast. He had looked for a set of those 84 hulls for years.

Jack,

Contact cw for possible use as trophies (he's the driving force behind this years' Nationals) Chris Wessels [xanderwess@yahoo.com] He travels a bit for work and may be in your area before September.

I'd tried to give away our '79 H16 hulls (bad/good? year for delam) and no takers.
