Nice shots!

Why is the retrieval line threaded trough the spi that way? What is the advantage over setups where the line runs on one side only (trough a small metal ring or similar)?

One of my spins uses eyelets as above (actually, come to think of it, the spin on my Hobie has as well) while the other two have rings/loops on one side only. I haven't found any major advantage/disadvantage in either case.

The rings are taking over from the eyelets.
The advantage of the rings is it is easier to thread the retrieval line and less likely to get it wrong when rigging.
