What equipment should I use to fasten the tramp track to the hulls of my H17? The parts which originally kept the track on the hulls have long since been lost. Is it enough to just use ordinary bolts & nuts that can fit the openings or do I need to look for specific characteristics (like rounded heads so I don't chew up my toes...) or additional pieces (like lockwashers)?

Are they rivets? Joy.

I wasn't around when they were taken apart, but it makes sense.

Anything I should look for when shopping for rivets?

Generally use stainless steel or aluminum. Hobie may be able to give you the original part specs.

Use the monel rivets from Hobie, part number 8010121 and back up washer 61360000. You might save a few cents by using other rivets, but this is the best way to make the repair. I have repaired two H-17's Caleb Tarleton

Thanks for the Hobie catalog parts. Any idea what the specs are for the Monel rivets and the washers? Ideally, I'd like to be back in the water this weekend - otherwise, I'd have them ordered in from Hobie.

See Hobie Cat Catalog 2002 online http://www.hobiecat.com/cats/partset.html

From the price list, the rivet is 6-10 PN HD Monel. The backup washer is curved to fit the lip on the hull. As an alternative to Monel, use stainless steel. Make sure you have a heavy duty rivet gun, the large type with long handles. The rivets must be set correctly with a tight fit, so there is no slop between the track and the hull. Good luck. Caleb

Oooh, right you are. Now I feel silly. I'd looked the part number up in my hardcopy of the manual and had an extra zero in there somewhere and didn't find it.

And now I see right there on the laminated sheets I have of the 17 part list - "H17 Rivet Guide." I could have found that if I'd looked. Thanks for pointing it out.

Now, I have to track down a local store that might stock monel rivets in metric sizes - well, worst case if our Hobie dealer doesn't have them in stock when they open for the week.

You can probably get the rivits thru Murrays online.

Looks like a good source. If my local Hobie dealer doesn't have them in stock, I may see whether Murrays can get them here tomorrow.
