At the formation of NACRA, it was a company of racing catamaran sailors which built racing catamarans for catamaran racers. In the beginning, Tom Rolland wanted to have an association which raced the Rolland 36, but the market was too small to support the Company. Tom Rolland was the prime person in this effort and his brother, Fred Rolland, helped a great deal. The acronym as you pointed out was for North American Catamaran Racing Association. The success of the Nacra 5.2 was the product which allowed the Nacra Company to remain in business. The brand name Nacra is no longer an acronym, just a brand name. In fact, it was the Company name until the aquisition of Prindle. Performance Catamarans became the new Company name, which produces both Nacra and Prindle catamarans.
