Sat/Sun, 19/20 October 2002

There is no other event in the world like the Worrell 1000. When the race

was first held in 1976, true beach cats, capable of launching and beaching

through large surf had only been in production for a little over seven

years. With no other races for reference the entire format was developed

from scratch. Even checkpoints, which are today an integral part of the

race were not introduced until the race's third year. Although the caliber

of competition was quite high even in those early years, the logistics and

organization was rudimentary. In many cases the shore crews were little

more than drinking buddies shanghaied into following along as shore support

for the sailors.

Today's race has evolved into a sophisticated, high intensity, two week

competition that can be an abrupt reality check for first-timers, even

world class sailors. However, for those that plan, organize, and focus on

details it will be an exihilating experience.

The Worrell 1000 Weekend Seminar will be one of the best planning tools you

will have going into this race. Whether you are a first time team member, a

Worrell 1000 veteran, or someone looking for a position on a team, don't

miss this unique opportunity to network with other teams and race officials.

This year the Seminar will be two days. Saturday will be a class room

setting with various speakers and discussions. The 2003 Rules and

Conditions of Entry will be reviewed and discussed before being finalized

on November 1, 2002. Sunday will move to the oceanfront beach in front of

the hotel for a hands-on workshop of surf launching and beaching techniques

with the Javelin 2. The water temperature in late October is usually mid to

high 60s and the daytime air temperature can range from the mid 50s to mid
