I've located 12' piece of Melges 24 mast (carbon) that I'm considering using for the new boom on Flight Risk, but the freight quotes I've gotten to ship it from Chicago to Spokane ranged from $240 to $460. I'm only paying $200 for the tubing. Anyone know of an affordable way to get it across country (too long for UPS or Fed X)? Anyone travelling most of that distance in the next couple of months? I'd be happy to pay $100 to someone who can get it closer to me. Thanks!

Try DHL Global Forwarding, previously Danzas. I just shipped a 12 foot spin pole for $100. However, they crushed it and it took 4 months for insurance to pay off. It wasn't DHL who broke it, it was a local subcontractor.

Anyway, they do long stuff like you need.

If it has to be freight, go with Old Dominion Freight. Be sure to tell them that you'll package the item yourself, and it will be shipped "terminal-to-terminal." This is very important, as it will (in most cases) entitle you to a 40% cut in price. You'll pack the item, drop it off at one of their freight docks, and pick it up at the destination dock. I've shipped 26 ft masts half-way across the country for less than $175. You'll have no trouble with a 12' stick.
DHL is probably where I'd check first though. UPS and FedEx both have length restrictions, whereas DHL is way cooler and can handle the long stuff. Good luck, and if you have any other questions, shoot me an email or call me...
