Someone had better tell New England Ropes that what they have been selling to boaters for 30 years is not rope, it is line.

Thats right, they sell ROPES, not LINES. If you call them up and tell them to sell you a 30ft "ROPE" guess what, that "ROPE" is no longer a rope. It is now a LINE. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

But you are right, it is also referred to as line when put to other uses. But even so, I think it is still just plain rope when there is a pile of it in the back of my car doing nothing.

Biggest pet peeve: get all the gear in the car, trailer box loaded, good wind, told friend to meet you at the boat AND BLAM!!!! Wife decides to revoke your pass.

I was told that rope is what you tie the boat down with and lines or sheets are what control the sails.

I don't do it on purpose, and I certainly don't enjoy it. My crew thinks it's pretty funny though.

I've never punched myself in the nuts when uncleating the main before, and ive never really thought of that happening before, but my personal pet peeves are when fishing boats feel like they have the right to take up half the GD lake with their cast. Twice I have snagged a line....Once I admit I was too close, but the other time, I was literally hundreds of feet from a sportboat and suddenly heard a someone start screaming........thats what I hate....

oh and, as soon as the rope is designated for sailing purposes, it is promoted to a line....... so even if you have options in the marine store, and it is on spools, you still have the options of different types of LINE not rope. Rope is what holds up a tent, line is what is used while sailing. When New England Ropes makes their product, it is rope, when it is shipped to the Marine Store, it becomes line.....Otherwise, anyone could buy their product and go mountain climbing, or camping, or make a swing out of it, then it is still rope, but on a boat is it a line. period.

Oh, and when you replace a sheet because it is old, and it gets thrown in the trunk of your car, or garage, or basement, or bedroom, or kitchen, or wherever, it is still a line. Despite the fact that it is no longer in use on any boat, it still remains a line. Once promoted to a line, it cannot be demoted back to a rope and will forever hold seniority over the other ropes.

Stricktly speaking the term rope only applies to corage over .39 in (10 mm ) in diameter.
Anything less than this is referred to collectively as "small stuff' which may be in decending order be referred to as cord, spunyarn or twine.
Domestic small stuff might be called string or thread.
Any rope of a particualr function is called a line as in washing line, tow line guy line, mooring line. Source Geoffery Budworth.
So, a mooring line is still a piece of rope. but stricktly speaking no beach cat would have any rope on it because the cordage is all 10 mm or less.
