Hi all just reading a few threads about masts, and looking at mine. Have a corosion hole in the top section above top spreader and in need of a mast in better condition, but do not want to change mainsail size at the moment. Any leads to a newer one would be great. Brett
Corsair 2 Currently can not lift this mast on my own,2 heavy

Hey Brett was in this predicament as well,
I just went and joined the state assoc. and picked up a new mast (blank) and all I did was transfer all my gear to the new mast.
the new mast was roughly $290 I think.
email Phillip Wasrren-Smith and he'll organise on for you.

I'm not saying its never been done, but I've never, ever seen a mozzie mast with another set of spreaders. That is strange.

You can buy a new mast from the association, around $250.00, don't know how you'll go finding a secondhand one, usual reasons for buying new one, is their either like what you've got or already broken.

If you rig up a new one, leave off the top spreaders, don't need em. And ask on here, theres lots of neater fittings and ideas for fitting out masts nowadays.

I'd forgotten about this til now but back in about 1996, I was working at Horizon Sailmakers, and went over and checked out Altona Yacht Club, I was talking to a few guys there and they offered to keep my boat the boatshed, while the paperwork was sorted. I had a new mast, and was asking Bob Wilson about fitting it out, when I told him the mast actually one of the original association masts and about 20 years old (but never fitted) he offered me a new mast and the money to buy another one (and to me that was the deal of the year) needless to say I accepted.

Hi Brett,

my original mossie mast was too heavy to lift up also. It had been filled with foam, which made it heavy. Your mast may also be full of foam, the foam tends to hold moisture in which can lead to corrosion as you describe.

A new mast will be much easier to handle, as well as being stronger . The upper diamonds is certainly something I haven't seen on a Mossie before either, but different things have been tried over the years. Somebody obviously didn't want the top of the mast to bend sideways . definatly leave them off new mast this will keep it lighter as well.

Just thinking about something else to check, stays often seem to break strands on boats that haven't been used for a while. Inspect carefully and if any strands are broken or signs of rust discolouration, I would advise replacing them.

Regards Gary.

Hi Matt,

sounds like a typical Bob job . He always carries on about different bends and weights of masts over time and has preferences for different ones. Talks like it makes a big difference, I disagree.

Just get out there on what you have, set it up to suit yourself and sail the pants off it. Works for me.

Hi Gary

Yeah I know what you mean, I didn't care what mast I had, but he wanted it and wanted badly, his eyes lit up when I said how old it was, and there wasn't a mark on it,so like I said I took up the offer, a few more dollars for me to blow on the boat somewhere else.

Regards
