2007 F18 Worlds Starts - Carnage begins !! - 02/20/07 12:37 PM

WOW....
The 2007 F18 worlds started today with an absolute bang.
Winds gusting 30knts and 3metre seas caused havoc across the course - 16 capsizes and many breakages caused the additional races to be cancelled for the day.

Wind expected to increase tomorrow so probably no sailing.

2 Ambulances and 3 people in hospital added to the drama along with a demasting and numerous breakages and collisions taking out some of the other boats.

Wednesday looks to be even worse, I Just walked to the beach from the Rydges resort the sand blasting the boats still on the beach were getting was a sight to see.

Bundock and Booth were a class act. Nacra Pro team went out after the race and fine tuned thier heavy weather sailing in prep for the rest of the event.

US Nacra team had mainsheet give way and retired to fix .hoping for better results in second race but it was cancelled

More fun tomorrow

Yeah, too bad.
How does a mainsheet break? Just curious....

Is that what is known to be the cause of the failure? Since I do my own splicing, it would be nice to know what specifically failed. I’ve “heard” Kenny is a monster trimmer, in that he can wear a sheet out quickly.

JC posted that the factory splice on the stock sheet failed. He's now using his own mainsheet. Dunno why he didn't put it on to begin with, as he took a lot of his own gear down with him with that intent.

Anyway - not something you'd expect to fail. They said they would have limped around the course and finished if they'd known racing would be cancelled, but they ran for the beach to make a repair instead. Chalk it up to bad luck - and then they lose the second day of racing entirely.

As long as it wasn't my boat. I would hate to have my boat out in that but I would love to be out there on one of their boats!

Which splice? Eye splice, cover/core traveler "splice?"
Hard to see how a taper would fail.

Re: 2007 F18 Worlds Starts - Carnage begins !! - 02/22/07 01:27 AM

If the core slips inside the cover, and the cover tears loose at the taper, it's a real mess. You pull on the line but the core just slides inside and even a cleat won't hold it.

I had something like that happen when I took the core out of the cover for the travelor tie-off. How do people prevent that from happening when they do that with the travelor tails?

They have their rigging done via "Treyline," which is guaranteed never to fail, or your money back AND line replacement.
My bet is that it wasn't a strip-cover taper, but was a splice between spectra and a line like Maffioli or Robline racing sheet. If not done properly, this type of splice could break loose.

So how would you splice spectra to larger single braid or a double braid and do it "right"? Maybe this should be answered in a new thread.

Natural as it may seem considering they are leading the event and their the "hometown" team, but don't the press releases seem to put B&A on a pedestal. Not like they don't deserve it, but it seems like every paragraph I read has their names in it :P

Re: 2007 F18 Worlds Starts - Carnage begins !! - 02/22/07 02:27 PM

Bad Jake....!!!!

What kind of double braid are you talking about splicing it to? I wouldn't use anything cheap like sta-set, and all the good stuff already has a high-tech core (spectra, dyneema, etc). I find it tough to correctly "tell" someone how to splice a rope (at least well), showing is really the only way as far as I'm concerned...

Re: 2007 F18 Worlds Starts - Carnage begins !! - 02/22/07 03:23 PM

Why would you splice vs. strip the cover off the last 10 feet or so? Seems you are asking for trouble with a splice, as we just saw.

Re: 2007 F18 Worlds Starts - Carnage begins !! - 02/22/07 03:35 PM

Whoaaaaa....I never said I had one of my tapers fail. I've seen them fail and I've had a cover on a tapered main sheet wear through and separate where it is cleated (only moments after noticing it was just starting to fray and remarking "we probably need to change that out tonight"). I'm not going to tell you who made that sheet...but you know who you are. Truth be told though, I did get it at a pretty low price - in exchange for buying a dinner.

Guess who had to sheet the "core" for the rest of the day at the North American's?.....
