Because there were 125 at Eurocat last weekend!

Before you start!

What do you think of the French System of linking a sailing resume with your result?

I personally like the idea... (having tried to get most of my local fleet's photo's linked up with registration info and results info).

How do they manage it?

Does each sailor control what goes into the resume?

How much value does it add to the fun factor?

ISAF sailor is available for those in ISAF classes... although it seems like most of the guys don't seem to update the info.. Any idea how different it is then the french system?

What do you think?

I was there as well, I recall seeing you go through the first gate as one of the first cats at the long distance race.
Too bad there was so little wind though <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />, but still a fun event to sail.
It was also good to see so many youth teams on the water.

Re: Why do we sail 400lb boats.......... - 05/03/07 10:32 PM

That's faulty logic. That's the argument the 125th lemming used when asked why he is jumping off the cliff. The issue at hand is why when the technology(old technology) is there to easily build a boat 100+ lbs lighter do we insist on heavy boats. If you say its an established fleet and satisfactory to those participating then that should be the end of the argument. Viva La F18 unless you think its too heavy. Its too heavy for me unless we had a big fleet here, in which case I would probably have an F18.

Sailing is great though isn't it?

But you actually need a 400lb boat!

Re: Why do we sail 400lb boats.......... - 05/03/07 11:52 PM

I don't understand this whole argument about 400-pound boats. Rick and I sailed a 400-pound boat (the Hobie 18) for 15 years and never had any problem whatsoever moving it around on land, getting it on and off the trailer, righting it -- just the two of us, who weighed combined under 290 lbs. And we could rig or de-rig the boat in 15 minutes.

What is the big deal about the boat weight? I just don't get it. That's what beach wheels are for.

Now masts are another story. That is what needs to be light. Too many men now with bad backs from trying to raise heavy masts by themselves. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

I wonder if Mischa's uber-fastness will wear off on my boat when he sails it for 500 miles <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Re: Why do we sail 400lb boats.......... - 05/04/07 12:40 AM

Exactly. I think that people are obsessed with portsmouth ratings. So what? Why not just have fun on the boat that you are on, and if it is F18 then who cares?

Re: Why do we sail 400lb boats.......... - 05/04/07 01:51 AM

I didn't bring it up this time...
BUT..
The mast is one of the reasons why I actually got rid of the 6.0. That thing was just crazy wrong heavy. I even raised it after taking the boat off the trailer (not a big fan of walking aorund on a mooshy tramp trying to hold the mast steady). I guess I could have put some contraption on there to make raising easier though. The HT mast is really light, almost to the point where you get in trouble because the wind takes it so easily but I can hold the mast up at the heaviest point when raising it with one hand while moving lines around and such. I think it is stronger than the 6.0 mast also.
But nuf said cause I think we done this befo

Re: Why do we sail 400lb boats.......... - 05/04/07 02:13 AM

I asked this question because some time ago I suggested that the Nacra was the up and coming fastest boat. I was pooh poohed. Well if Bundy and Co have met their match the Hobie has met its match. Everybody, change boats for the square dance.
I encourage the developement of faster F18s because soon I will be able to afford a Tiger as a beach boat.
BTW winners don't like sailing losing boats I wonder how long it will take.

Re: Why do we sail 400lb boats.......... - 05/04/07 02:14 AM

well the P18 was heavier than the hobie 16 and the hobie 18 was heavier than the nacra 5.2 and the nacra 5.8 was heavier than the p18-2 and the G-cat5.8 heavier than the p-19 and the hobie 20 was heavier than the mystere 5.5 and the hobie 21 is heavier than the nacra 6.0 and I know people in there 60's still jacking that stick. sorry Rick but this could be the reason sailor's are scatterd more today than of the 80's 70's . Less Information more sailing think about it......

Did Rick check your teeth and the palms of your hands before taking you on?
The key word in your statement is 15 YEARS! pioneering was that so now it's time to move on.

Mary, I have a couple of sound tract suggestions to go with your post…LOL

I think I hear Bruce Springsteen singing “Glory Days” in the background.

Or how about this one…”Those were the days my friend, we thought they never end, we’d sing and dance forever and a day…We’d do just what we choose, We’d fight and never lose, those were the days, oh yes those were the days….” (Can’t remember who sang that one…)

Bob

Terry Jacks with "Seasons in the Sun" i guess. Songs theme might be fitting to your post, or perhaps not.. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Edit: Gahh. something bugged me about this, and it was of course not Terry Jacks. It was someone I have never heard of, Mary Hopkins.. http://artists.letssingit.com/mary-hopkins-lyrics-those-were-the-days-my-friend-v7x2lgm

I'm sorry. I shouldn't even have mentioned it -- I forgot that the whole subject was thoroughly covered last month in "Whats up with 400 pound boats?????" I didn't mean to start it all over again.

By the way, I freely admit that I am older than dirt. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

As far as metal sticks go, the 6.0 mast ain't bad at all. My H-18 mast felt worse. If you really want to bust your discs, step a Hobie-21 mast - I think they weighed as much as the rest of the boat!

You will be faster after he has sailed it. 2 reasons;

1] he will set it up well

2] you will know that it is set up well and you will sail more confidently
