Build a f18 - 06/16/15 02:37 PM

Hi
I would like to build a foiling f18 in fiberglass
Is it possible?I could work on it 6 hours a day.
Do you have some plans that I could use?
Thanks

Nope totally impossible. The F18 rules don't allow setups that would make foiling possible. But I don't think that is what you mean.

Buy and old F18 for a few $K (Nacra F18, Hobie tiger etc) and then you just have to change dagger board cases, reinforce transoms and oh yeh build foils.

I guess an F18 is probably not the best platform for such a project - they are heavy. Would need large cord foils to carry the weight and would have a lot of drag.

Maybe start with an F18HT?

Of course if you worked 8 hours a day instead, anything might be possible wink

build a moth. lots of plans, less material and labor

actually, build 2 moths. then strap them together.

Which foiling catamaran could I build?

Re: Build a f18 - 06/17/15 09:09 PM

The Taipan 4.9 is light and fast with plans available for home building but the centre board cases would have to be repositioned so it wouldn't be a Taipan anymore so you may as well widen out the stern a bit like the do with the A's, not sure it's worth the effort to build a non foiling boat from scratch to then convert to foiling

Ok
i'll search a bit
I know that the forum is based on catamarans but I want to ask you if is it possible to build a musto skiff. It would be my dream!!

The web tells me that the design/intellectual property is protected by the creator and only one authorized builder. May have difficulty getting plans to build that boat.

But I'm sure there are many other high performance skiffs that a home-builder could construct?

Waterbug could you tell me some of these high perfomance skiff?
Thanks
Are there any plans for a moth?

Re: Build a f18 - 06/19/15 08:18 PM

I am no expert, but:

29er
49er
International 14
12 skiff
18 skiff
16 skiff
Cherub dingy

to name a few. I think there is something like "Q" class which is an unrestricted boat under a certain size. I'd figure there would be plenty of designs there...

You can build your own R-class. http://www.rclass.org/

Re: Build a f18 - 06/22/15 12:31 PM

I was thinking about something like the sl 33 or the gc 32
Are they affordable in terms of construction?

Re: Build a f18 - 06/22/15 02:31 PM

depends on what your definition of "affordable" is.

Re: Build a f18 - 06/22/15 06:57 PM

Is it possible to build something similar
Even a flying phantom

Re: Build a f18 - 06/22/15 09:46 PM

Dude I'm going to say what everyone is thinking.

Are you as stupid as you're coming across or a troll? you can build anything you want but 90% of the boats you've asked about are single manufacturer one designs which means you can only buy them off one builder not build our own.

The flying phantom is basically a bastardised F18, so yes you can do something like it. Just do what is said in post 2 of this thread. Buy a second hand F18 and fit your own foils etc.

Re: Build a f18 - 06/23/15 09:42 AM

Stay calm
I was also asking for curiosity. I want to build something by myself, not buy a second hand one thats why.
You're not forced to anwser so if you have to anwser of one of my questions ok if not stay silent!!
Are there any plans for a normal f18 or maybe someone who has built it could help me?

Re: Build a f18 - 06/23/15 05:47 PM

What kind of time/money are you budgeting for this project?

How much space do you have for the construction?

How would you classify your build/construction skill?

Are you experienced and equipped for vacuum bagging?

Have you worked with carbon fiber composite layups?

Have you checked the other forum with Phil's project?

Are you located near a good supply of material inputs?

Are you related to a certain oil prince that owes me $10M USD?

Yes, some of your responses sound very bot-like, but if you were to share a little more of your objective(s) it might be helpful in narrowing down your project selection

Re: Build a f18 - 06/24/15 08:19 AM

I realise that a project like this is too difficult for me. I don,t have any skills in construction, it would be my first construction.
I think I'll go for a moth in plywood.
Do you know anyone that has built one?
