Phil Fosters Park - 06/07/06 09:13 PM

Phil Fosters Park under the Blue Heron bridge is open again. They have reopened the catamaran boat launch site again and made lots of other renovations. To get there take Blue Heron Exit on I-95 and head east. It is accross the intercostal bridge just before you get to Singer Island.

Craig, do you know how crowded this place gets during weekends?. What time can you arrive and find a parking spot for the trailer?

Where is the beach cat ramp?. Is it the SW corner of the park?

The park is not usually crowded and I have never had a problem. The Ramp (beach) is in the SW corner under the Blue Heron Bridge as per attachment. It is just before you get to the fishing pier that is next to the Blue Heron bridge.

Thanks, I am ready to try that park. It will save some wear on the car/trailer as I have only launched from Hobie Beach in K Biscayne.

map with waypoints - 06/15/06 01:38 PM

It is a great sailing area complete with great ocean and lake sailing. There is also camping on Peanut Island that is only accessible by boat. They have formal sites and informal sites. There are also modern bathrooms and showers. During low tide the North side has lots of sandbars everyone rafts up on. Sunday is the big raft up day and the place is swarmed by boaters. It is a little more laid back with fewer boaters on Saturday.

[Linked Image]

IC-Flag BR- you can sail this whole area with only one bridge to navigate.
BH Bridg- This is where the boat launch is. Directly under the bridge.
Peanut - You can land your boat on peanut from here to the west with out too much hastle. Be careful for rocks.
Munion- Can beach on this island.
Lil Mun- smaller island to beach on.
PB Shore- Palm Beach Shores resort. tiki bar, hot tub pool. To the north there is Crown Plaza and Hilton, all within walking/sailing distance and with tiki bar, pool and hot tubs. You can also rent Hobie 14's.
SI Reef- There is a reef slightly off the shore you can run into if you are buzzing the coast and not paying attention.
PBSC- Palm Beach Sailing Club

Thanks Craig, impressive set of data. I'll try the park next week, this weekend I'll go to the CABB round K Biscayne.

Easy to do when it is your back and front yard. The home mark is my home.

Too bad I will be in Ohio next weekend, I would meet you at one of the tiki bars for a drink.

Craig,
Where are you going to be in Ohio? We sail here, too. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Re: Phil Fosters Park - 06/19/06 01:27 PM

Hobie Beach - Early in the morning on weekends its OK. During the summer you need to get in by 900 or 930 to get a spot. When you return in the afternoon its hard to describe, sort of like a 5 de Mayo celebration in central America. Between the noise distorsions from loud boomboxes blaring every 30 ft, the crowd density, BBQs, traffic jams etc it takes a little to get used to. But, if you can get over this and the garbage nothing beats Biscayne Bay. I usually sail Sundays with another P19.

. . . the garbage . . .

Long way to drive for that! Any other launching sites on Biscayne Bay?

I'm considering a trip to Phil Fosters Park. Anything happening during the week?

Biscayne Bay beach access... I only know of Hobie Beach on Virginia Key . Marina/sail club wise you have some options. I would dread to launch or get back to a boat ramp at a public marina due to the heavy traffic on weekends.

Re: Phil Fosters Park - 06/21/06 11:08 PM

In the old days we used to set up at the bottom of the bridge , just after the toll booth on the right. We may have to look at that again because of the elements at the other site.

It is more out of the way but I thought a hobie 18 climbed out of the water on NE side of Card sound bridge in the M2KL last year. That looked like a nice secluded spot. You could sail around elliot key and out to sea.

You mean before the big bridge? At the left end of the bridge in the attached pix. That area appears to have flats and a mucky bottom, however, you are right about the 'elements'.

Ohio - 06/22/06 08:03 PM

Hi Mary,

I just got to Ohio today. I am at Mid Ohio which is near Mansfield. I just fly in, work the race and fly out. I usually only see the airport, race track and hotel (preferably with a decent bar). Our schedule has been really hectic this year and I have a ton of new projects I am trying to finish up. How far from Mansfield are you.

Phil Fosters Park During the week - 06/22/06 08:06 PM

Singer Island has some vacationers during the week but not as many during the summer as during the winter season. If you want to camp on Peanut during the week, it should be really laid back.
