boat history - 06/11/06 01:42 PM

Is there a web site for researching boat history?
I have sail number 957 and would like to know who built it?
Home build or Professional.?

Re: boat history - 06/12/06 10:11 AM

I have also just got a mozzie sail no 654 and also would like to know any history. Im on the northern beaches sydney and are there many clubs with mozzies in them?

Re: boat history - 06/12/06 10:48 AM

I don't believe there is any in Sydney and possibly NSW.

If you are looking for a club, I race out of Kurnell Catamaran Club and may pic up a Mozzie for myself to have a bit of fun (add spinnaker)

KCC once had a very healthy fleet of Mozzies and there are many pics of them up at our club. Currently we have members ranging from World Champs to novices in classes such as, Tornado, F18, A Class, Nacra 5.8, Taipan 4.9, Maricat 4.3, Maricat 5.0, Nacra 14 sq, Prindle 15. We also have a large catamaran division that races with us once a month.

Racing is on Sundays begining on the 2nd Sunday of September.

I am also from the northern beaches and have heard there is a cat club sailing up at Pittwater. Can someone verify this?

Re: boat history - 06/12/06 11:12 AM

There are Mosquitos sailing at Lake Jinabyne but that's probably a bit too far to go for a day's sailing particularly this time of year.

If the Mozzies were to start their own fleets both on South side (Botany Bay) and on the North Shore that would be fantastic. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

There is a club in pitwater sailing from sandy beach I think they mostly sail hobies and they have a web site. I think they call themselvs palm beach sailing club. Unfortunatly Kernell is a little far away but its not out of the question. Ben 654

Re: boat history - 06/14/06 02:25 AM

Hi,
this spreadsheet has been around for a while, Roy (1770) and Brian (formerly 1773) have been working on it. While sail number 957 isn't on there you might recognise some of the boat owners names around that time and find the history that way.
http://www.christiessailing.net/mossieinfo/Boat%20numbers%20&%20names.xls

If you can fill in any gaps in the spreadsheet PM me and and I will pass them on to Roy.

Alternative you could take a few pics of 957's hulls, internal too and we might be able to work out some info.

If anyone knows the Carter Hulls story it would make an interesting read. I've heard snippets of info, apparently he churned out Mosquitos by the dozen, did it in his spare time and was a wood working teacher, any more info out there?

I've owned two plywood Carter hulled Mosquitos and have been told my current boyer hulled boat (1704) is a copy of the Carter hull though it seems a bit more buoyant up front to me, rocker looks the same though.

Re: boat history - 06/14/06 11:03 AM

Darryn,

Bloody fantastic to have a register <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />. I have copied it and shall update with all Westernport Bay Mozzies.

If it could then be added to by other Mozzie fleets then perhaps it could then be located on the National Mosquito Website. We could also add columns "sailed at", "build date" and "notes". Sorry I'm just getting enthusiastic <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />.

Re: boat history - 06/14/06 12:52 PM

Darryn,

It didn't take too long to update. I tried adding it as an attachment but the server won't let me upload an .xls file. See if you can get Yacht Club details added from your end. The new yachts at Lake Bonney could also be added.

Does anyone have details of how to upload .xls files ?

Peter

Re: boat history - 06/14/06 07:07 PM

You could try working around the restriction by renaming it to a .jpg file. I have created a small xls file, renamed it and attached it. One would have to tell the others about the necessary renaming back to .xls.
Lets see how it goes. It worked for me right now. Right-click - Save As - Do the rename of the extension.
The management may not be crazy about this.

Re: boat history - 06/15/06 01:38 PM

Bobcat,

Thanks, I'll give it another try. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> It didn't work <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. When I try the save as command from the spreadsheet it doesn't allow me to put a jpg extension. If I try to right click from windows explorer it doesn't have a save as option. I think I must have failed internet science 101 !! Do you have any more hints ?

Peter

p.s. What class Cat do you race ?

Re: boat history - 06/15/06 01:54 PM

Peter

When you use the save as, type the name of the file as such
"file.xls" then select the file type as all files. By typing "dot xls it will save it as a an excel file. It works, I did it earlier. good luck

Cheers <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Re: boat history - 06/15/06 02:05 PM

Another tip..

If your going the other way simply save your xls file somewhere and change the "name".xls to "name".jpg You may need to make windows explorer show file extentions... Then post it as a jpg.
Posted By: bobcat

Re: boat history - 06/15/06 02:36 PM

i guess I need to expand my explanation a little. What I wrote was more concerning the downloader, not the uploader.

Starting with a saved .xls file on your computer save a copy of it someplace handy in preparation for the upload. As was suggested, I have my computer set to show all file extensions. I rename this file's extension to .jpg using the right-click menu(this is occuring outside of excel, I don't think you will be able to do the rename function inside XL). This file can now be uploaded using the forums attachment feature.

Forum users would then right-click the attachment and select the save-as function. It can be renamed back to .xls right now or after it is saved to the hard drive.

PS. I am kinda between boats right now. I have been sailing a Nacra 5.2 for years and am waiting for a Blade to show up in the next week or so.

I have attached the above linked boat file using this method. This worked for me using Internet Explorer. Using Mozilla Firefox, the save-as function was trying to save the file pointing at the attachment, not the attachment itself.

I've added the spreadsheet (as "Mosquito Boat History") to the VMCA documents page which is here:

Shouldn't be any problem to download it from there.

Re: boat history - 12/25/06 11:34 AM

Tim,

I've updated the Mozzie register again with details collected over the last couple of months. There are now a few gaps with more new Mozzies being launched. If anyone knows who owns the newest additions to the fleet I'd be glad to add them. If anyone knows of any other Mozzies out there that aren't on the list I'd be keen to list them as well.

Would you please replace the old listing on the VMCA website.

Peter

Re: boat history - 06/19/07 08:18 AM

All,

I have been working towards collating all the Mosquitoes from Darwin and the NT now for some time and they will be added to the list when I have it. As I was State Sec and measurer for many years there I thought this was going to be easy....not so, the records have been destroyed as DSC was short of storage, but I am getting there.

As for Lake Bonney...I have done them too, just have not up loaded the details.

David,

Thanks for your input. Any help is much appreciated. Is the Lake Bonney info I have close to being correct? <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Re: boat history - 06/20/07 07:19 AM

Peter,

I have sent an up to date list to Tim S. It includes most of the Lake Bonney boats, some of the older boats are missing but slowly getting there.

The Darwin boats are taking me a tad longer but those details will be added as I get them.

This register is way overdue and credit to those who got it going.....hope that the history won't be lost now.

Re: boat history - 05/17/08 04:19 AM

Hi Peter

1680 doesn't have a name as yet. I guess I should come up with something by next sailing season. As far as racing goes I haven't entered any races. I've been getting the feel for sailing / capsizing and just lurking on the sidelines observing. Im still not comfortable out on trapeze but I guess that will come with practice. I intend to start joining in the races when sailing season starts again in October I think. I'm very aware that with my current skill level I will be lucky to finish a race within the required time period let alone challnge anyone.

Re: boat history - 05/21/08 11:17 AM

Mark,

Checking rudder alignment goes a long way to getting good boat speed from the very start. At least if you have that right then you only have to work on sail settings and your own skills. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The fist race should be in light winds so you don't have to get out on trapeze and can keep your weight as far forward as possible to keep the transom from digging in and slowing you down. <img src="http://www.catsailor.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

Once you master getting out on trapeze with the mainsheet in one hand and the tiller extension in the other there will be no holding you back.

Peter

Enjoy,

Peter,

Suddenly made me feel old, especially as I sailed with a lot of the early boats and 2/3 digit numbers were common. My youngest son worked out how many years around these things, that was scarey.

Hi All,

There is another couple of mosquitos at Sugarloaf this year. cool

Number 263 is now owned by Denis Spooner at our club, but sadly is no longer viable to be rebuilt and is going to the great boat yard in the sky. cry

The good news is that she filled out an organ doner card and will help make a 30 year unfinished project come to life. The same ex owners of #263 also started #853 so Denis has this as a project to complete by next season. shocked

Boat number 270 has also appeared and I will forward details after I speak to the proud owner. smile

The Toy is no longer the oldest (original) boat on the water! - IMHO of course... blush

Re: boat history - 02/05/09 11:49 AM

Speaking of QLD Mozzies I was checking the Elwood Beach webcam at lunch time a couple of days ago smile and saw a Mozzie on the beach with the sail from 1727. I know that 1727 went to God some time ago. cry Does anyone know who this Mozzie sighting might belong to ? whistle

Re: boat history - 02/06/09 02:37 AM

I think it is 'Gero'.

Ncik maybe?

I think it is his mossie but has other hulls under it as he broke the originals.

Am I correct? Hello Ncik?

Hi All,

Since it is now the end of the sailing season the latest version of the register is attached. smile Text delimiting is a problem for me. frown If anyone has a suggestion to fix this issue it would be greatly appreciated.

Since there is plenty of potential sales activity I expect that there will be a new edition at the start of the next season. grin

Peter

Re: boat history - 04/30/09 09:51 PM

Hi all
I am new to these forums so apologies if i get something wrong.
To help you with the register I have the following.
Sail number 643 (Sold on ebay march 09) is now owned by Jay Pitson (My son) of Mount Martha Victoria.
The intention at this stage is to teach the young bloke the pleasures of sailing and if he shows a greater interest will look at purchasing a newer boat.
The boat will never be bought up to a competetive condition but is a great starting platform for my kids. When he comes up with a name I will send it through for inclusion onto the register.
Cheers
Dave

Bobcat,

Thanks for your efforts. cool They are much appreciated. We should make you an honorary Mozzie sailor. grin

Dave,

Thanks for the update. I will put it in the register for the next edition at the start of next season. Was it you that came down to Somers for a look at our fleet ?

Brian,

Thanks for the info. It is usually in spreadsheet format but it can't be attached unless it is a txt or pdf or jpg type file. cry

Regards,

Peter

p.s. To everyone who reads the forum and has updates please put them on this thread so that we can keep register details correct. smile

p.p.s. Dave, welcome to the forum and the Mozzie swarm. May all your Mozzie sailing be enjoyable.

Hi Peter
Yes it was me that you saw on your club day.
Being new to Mosquitos I am trying to suck up as much information that I can about them.
Hopefully the boat will be ready to sail in the warmer weather.

Re: boat history - 05/04/09 08:15 PM

peter, one of my relatives works for a government dept, there email system does not allow any picture files to be uploaded, wat they do is just change the extension type to suit. so instead of file being *****.jpg they rename it to be *****.doc this way it allows their system to send and recieve all they do is say what extension to change it to after you have downloaded and saved, maybe tis will work for your .xls files. just rename it from boat register.xls to boat register.txt than just tell people to rename it after they download. ??????????? worth a try maybe????

Re: boat history - 05/04/09 08:35 PM

I have some info that is archival, and could be added to the list. My father, Don Thorn (dec) and myself had 4 mossies over the years.
#109 Lisa, Blockey kit
#701 Lisa Too, hulls by Ken Lott
#1261 Orange Peel, foam Frank Nott hulls
#1655 Lemon Peel, hulls by Bruce Carter (It is good to see on this forum that peter still sails the boat.
My son Lindsay sails occasionly from Rosebud (not Rye) on #1717.
All the best Wayne Thorn

Re: boat history - 05/06/09 11:38 AM

Wayne,

Thanks for the info. They will all be listed in the next issue and #1717 yacht club info has been updated. wink I assume that Lisa #109 and Lisa Too #701 have gone to Mozzie heaven. cry Any history on what happened to Orange Peel #1261 or any of the others ? Were they particularly successful in races ? Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

Way back when I was a kid sailing a Sabot I remember going to Blockeys with my Dad for some fittings or lifejacket. I remember it being very busy and people buying Mirror kits. eek

Andrew,

Is there a small nameplate rivetted onto the rear beam with the yacht registration number or some identification on the inside of either hull ?

Regards,

Peter

Re: boat history - 05/08/09 08:03 AM

Peter,

No sorry, no knowledge as to what happened to the earlier boats.
#109 would have sunk as just too heavy as a home built 1st boat.
#701 was a good boat for its day. #1261 was a foam sandwich, but was too "soft", and I felt was really not as good as a good timber boat of its time. #1655 was an excellent boat, but of course a heavy weight, and through most of its life with us, was sailed with 2 people that combined, weighed to much to do very well. We always had reasonable results, especially on handicap!
Mum would still have a lot of archival material, such as early Mosquotes and results dating way back etc.

Wayne Thorn

Re: boat history - 06/02/09 10:08 AM

Well Pete what can I say, well its more what I can't say that's no. I was given mosquito 1282 which you will probaly know as the bright orange one on the promanade. The hulls are in despirate need of a repaint although in good condition. The blades sails and trailer are also in good condition. So the plan is give 699 to a friend to fix up sell 1661 eventually, still a few improvements to be made there and race 1282 when complete, lots of work to do. Have fun in the pond will keep you posted cheers, Ant

Re: boat history - 06/02/09 10:15 AM

Hi Peter,

can inform you that. 1747 now owned by Mitch Meade and 1749 now owned by Nick Baglioni, I think the spelling is correct. You will meet them at the Sauna Sail. Will keep you posted when Boat Names are changed.

Re: boat history - 06/03/09 11:56 AM

Anthony,

Thanks for the update. It must be a pretty good feeling to have 3 Mozzies all at the same time. cool I remember looking at the orange Mozzie on the promenade before it was painted orange. There was lots of water inside it so it must be watertight. grin

Tim,

I have updated the register with the new details. Looks like GLYC will have a good Mozzie fleet next season (6 or 7 regulars). cool

Peter

Hi All,

You can add another boat to the register.

I am putting together a new boat. Sail no. 1815 using Boyer hulls recently purchased. The boat will be called Sanity and sailed out of Rye YC on the Mornington Peninsula.

Looking forward to sailing with all the other Mossies this summer.

Nic,

Thanks for the information and on behalf of the VMCA welcome to the swarm. cool With a new set of Boyer Hulls you are sure to do well. grin

Since there has been so much recent buy and sell activity I have issued an updated register below. It just couldn't wait until October and the start of the new sailing season. laugh

As usual open it with Microsoft Excel and save it to your hard drive.

Peter

I got an email about Mossie number 1320 "Rye Vita" being washed up on the beach south of Sorrento SC, Stbd hull broken. Not sure if it's still there but doesn't sound good for it.

Re: boat history - 01/22/10 01:42 PM

G,day all.
I am now the owner of 1704 [ Top Gun ] and have sold 1724 to Mark Baines who will also be racing regularly at Mannering Park.. Hopefully with the publicity generated from the national we can get a few more mozzies at Mannering Park. A few people have expressed interest in getting one, if only we had more good 2nd hand ones available up here.

P.S. Having the nationals up here was a great boast and everyone got to see what a great boat they are so thank you everyone who came up.
