F12 sail area - 07/06/08 12:09 AM

Current values (I think)

DS12 7.0 sq.m
Vudu 7.0 sq.m
Wouter 7.0 sq.m
Phill 5.6 sq.m

Please chip in with other numbers if these are incorrect or if you've developed another design.

If you vote no please add a recommendation and we'll create a new poll when necessary.

Is there a design for these sails yet? I watched that sailrite making your own sails thread with interest, is it possible to order sails to sew together myself and if so is it worth the effort?

I have just ordered a new sail for a F12 from North Sails Finland, and if I understood the thing right it will be made in Singapour, so maybe by North you can get the sail done. for me the price is 450 euros (about 900 AD) all included.

That sounds like a good price Gato.

Not so sure you can get the material for one sail for that price

Re: F12 sail area - 10/01/08 11:20 PM

Did that include them doing the development on the sail or did you supply the specs on what you wanted?
Im mainly asking this as not only do I need two mains for the F12's but as I build more cats I would also like to have various size sails to suit different crews at the club

What I did was to go to the lokal sailmaker (North Sails)with the drawing that Scarecrow supplied. He designed the sail from that for no extra costs. I got the first sail for half of the price mentioned above.
As they do everything by special computer programs there is no big deal to make a set of differents sizes.
If there is a local sailmaker working with North Sails you could try to contact him and tell him that there is a design i North Finland, maybe he can get the specs from there.

That price is in the ball park but a little high. I would have hoped for a bigger discount on second generation sails.

Jeff the sail plan in your plan set is enough for any experianced sail maker to build your sail to. A good sail maker will take the dimensions supplied on the sail plan, combine it with data for your boat and produce the sails.

I think you can maybe get a better price investigating a little. another thing that the sailmaker will be very interested in is the characteristics of the mast.

The best Australian quote I've had to date is AUS$650 including battens. I won't pass on details here but people can feel free to contact me for details.

Gato, have you measured the bend of your carbon mast yet? Any comparisons with an equivalent aluminium mast?

I don't have them at hand for the moment, Scarecrow should have them too I think. The one for the DS12 is a little bit soft, but the next one will be a little bit stiffer sidewise.
If I don't remember wrong we went for the same stiffness as an alu spar.

Thanks guys I cant really match the sails to a mast yet as I'm going to use ali masts I already have then if the minimum weight goes down build some carbon ones

Ncik designed bend numbers with mast supported at step and hounds were:

10kg at head.

38.3mm fore-aft deflection
114mm side deflection

10kg midway between supports

16.4mm fore-aft
49mm side ways

From memory Gato nailed the transverse numbers, but ended up a little stiffer longitudinally due to his double barrel sail track.

I kept the rig reasonably soft sideways to help it lay off a little in gusts to auto-depower, however, from Gato's experience I believe we could get away with a little more stiffness. I've been meaning to re-engineer to remove the spreaders but payed work keeps getting in the way.

Avoiding spreaders would be good, keep it simple and all.

Scarecrow, if you send me the carbon layout for the mast without spreaders I give it a try, but no hurry, will not have the time before X-mas
