Opinions please! thinking of renting out my 38ft - 08/08/06 03:31 PM

I'm probably at least 10 yrs from retiring. I need to justify keeping my cruising cat, we won't be taking long enuf trips for awhile. I live on the intracoastal waterway in east central FL (Vero area) and could keep her at my dock but having a boat of this size is such a waste if it's not exercised. My thinking goes like this... the price of cat rentals is incredible 3.5K to over 5K a week for a boat like mine. What if I could rent my boat for lets say 2K a week or even less? I know insurance would be a bunch, this and maintenance would be my biggest cost. Any other things that should be considered both pro and con? Fair winds, Mark

Get your captains license and rent it with captain and crew. You protect your interests (boat) and the insurance will be not as expensive. If renting out your boat you need to have available someone to be able to go out to service the boat if something breaks/malfunctions while it is out. If you have to call someone on the spur of the moment that can get very expensive. There is a reason they rent of $4+ per week. If you don't have the time to captain it yourself, try the weekend only thing. You can get more per day and just do 2 or 3 days. Just a thought.
