Good idea!

had a mate who flew Herc's for the RAF; he said if we qualified for either Savannah or Athens he could "deliver" kit for us no problem.

Didn't something similar happen for a Condor event on Cyprus many years ago?

Would the kit survive the parachute drop? Did you plan to go down with the kit, ready for measurement? grin

Savannah, loads of bases within driving distance.

Ditto for Athens. Large US base just down the coast.

Plan was to drive the boats, car and support truck into the back and reverse out at the destination.

Re: Kelly Park - 05/18/09 05:31 PM

I hope to be better in time to make this event. Love the location and the locals are great.

I've come down with a strange illness however, and after a week in the ICU, I don't know if I will feel up to racing cats any time soon. I can only hope for a speedy recovery, but my Doctors don't want me doing squat.

Last month, end of April, I had a trip to Kuwait. This was while the big swine flu scare was going around, so when we arrived at the KWI airport from the States, they rounded up the entire crew (4 pilots, 11 flight attendants) and made us fill out medical data cards that said we were not sick. Easy enough. BUT, on the back of the card, it also said we were going to have to go to one of their clinics and be seen by a doctor to be sure we were not sick. So, next day, about noon, we gather the 15 of us in the hotel lobby and take a short bus ride to the local clinic, to mill about for nearly an hour, to be seen one at a time by one of their doctors. Of course there are a few sick locals in the waiting room with us...

So we finish up and return to the hotel, and 3 days later, we depart for Atlanta. I got home on about May 2. The next few days, I start to develop a slight headache and a slight fever, which grew a little worse, day by day, until on May 10, Mother's Day, I could not get out of bed to give my wife the day she deserved, she was sure I was just ducking it, but in fact, I was buring up. I don't know what my fever was, but very high, woke up in a puddle of sweat, took advil, couldn't knock it down, pounding headache, etc.

The next morning, Monday, early, I was scheduled to drive one of my daughters up to the Orlando airport so she could fly up to her boyfriend in Syracuse, NY, and drive his car back here. Believe me, I was in no mood. But it would have been a logistical nightmare to change it all so I said, Look, you drive up there, I will sleep in the back seat, then drive home when I feel like it. It's a 90 minute drive from my house to the airport.

So, we get up at 0200, depart at 0300, and are very nearly at the airport when she said I became "unresponsive". We had been talking about which exit to take to the airport, how much the toll booth was going to be, etc, she said my eyes rolled back in my head, my head flopped over and I was out, mid sentence. She pulled over, called 911 and the ambulence showed up 15 minutes later and took me to the hospital.

Well, they had lots of fun poking me with about every kind of needle you can imagine. They did a Cat scan, MRI of my brain, EEG of my brain, EKG of my heart, lots of blood taken for tests, even a spinal tap to get some spinal fluid, brain swelling, viral menegitis is what they think I have, from a bug I must have picked up in Kuwait. They said I was talking like a 2 yr. old and making no sense. The doctors said it was nothing they had ever seen here, so it must be something I got over there.

I was in Intensive care for a week, just got released last night to come home, and here I sit, nothing to do for a loooong time. They won't let me drive, or fly of course, or much of anything else. My head is still pounding with a pretty severe headache which gets worse any time I move my head quickly. At least it's finally raining out, the lake has gotten so low and the lawn so dead, it was very depressing. Now I've got something to look foreward to; a lake if it fills back up soon. Don't know when I'll be able to sail again, especially Uni. My wife is affraid I'll pass out, fall off the boat and drown.

Pete can probably fill us in on the details of viral menegitis, he's in the business, but it's not good, that much I know.

Re: Kelly Park - 05/18/09 05:39 PM

Wow...that sucks! a week in ICU....
Good thing you were stateside when this happened, and not in Mumbay or other exotic places!
But it could have been worse, say bacterial meningitis. The viral form is milder (but in this case that is relative), and the recovery is both faster and usually complete (unlike the bacterial type, that can easily kill you).
Hope you feel better soon!
Posted By: Timbo

Re: Kelly Park - 05/18/09 05:41 PM

Thanks Arie. Yeah, they were all talking about bacterial and said I could be dead...

Re: Kelly Park - 05/18/09 05:47 PM

That's over my head! You definitely need to follow Dr.'s orders.

http://www.cdc.gov/meningitis/viral/viral-faqs.htm#1

My first concern as a nurse would be the fever. Anything over 101.5 is generally considered reportable, I have to call the Dr.

Hope you feel better soon.

I hope you get to feeling better!!!!

Take it easy, we don't want you to go anywhere. You're the only person that gives Ding a hard time and we all know it's all in good fun. He is our president because of you. smile

Re: Kelly Park - 05/18/09 05:58 PM

Don't know if this will help with putting your wife's mind at ease, but once you recover from viral meningitis it does not reoccur in the same form (your immune system builds resistance). Thus, little risk of passing out on the boat in the future, unless there is rum involved!

Gee Tim,

That is some news. I hope your recovery proceeds quickly without further glitches.

Thanks for that info Arie, I will tell her. That -might- help settle her down.

And thanks to all the other well-wishers. I hope to rejoin the ranks of the wet booties soon.

And Dave, In the mean time, you can race my Blade, I know you have been Jones'n to get your hands on one and -go Uni- ever since you ran for F16 Class President.

I say we put Dave on my boat for Kelly Park! Real Men sail Uni! What say Ye?

Re: Kelly Park - 05/19/09 12:17 AM

thats jacked up. glad you are home and doing better...
I imagine they ran the spinal tap CSF for some random viruses. did they tell you the cell count?
my dorky mind wants to know. I would be the guy who did the spinal tap and ordered the 10k worth of tests.

you get the bill yet? not saying it wasn't worth it (obviously it is) but if you haven't gotten the bill yet, wait until you see it. I am thinking probably close to 30k. obviously you have insurance, but imagine if you didn't.
wayyyyy off topic but healthcare is imploding.

btw.. only 1/2 leased a horse. got lucky on that one...
Posted By: Timbo

Re: Kelly Park - 05/19/09 02:18 AM

Thanks PTP. I did not hear what the cell count was, and no, I have not seen the bill, but I'm sure it will be substantial, as will be my pay cut until I can return to work, which might be a very long time depending on what else they find.

Congrats on the horse thing. Got the -first- shoe bill yet?

Re: Kelly Park - 05/19/09 10:23 AM

Tim, best wishes on a speedy recovery. I know (only too well) what it's like with the uncertainty of when you'll get cleared to sail again. But rest assured the time goes by quickly and next thing you know you're out there again!

Since you'll max out your family deductible, it's time to consider any needed procedures that you've been putting off.

I don't know --- I think you'd be scary with boobs.

That sux Tim, I'm sure rum can kill those germs.

Get well soon. Chuck

Re: Kelly Park - 05/19/09 08:55 PM

Thanks all you well wishers!

Here's my logic on the boob job, for me. A friend of mine bought a $10,000 set for his wife, she was already smoking hot, didn't really need them, but was going to be in a local MRS. Highlands County Fair beauty pagent, so he bought her the boobs.

Long story short, she wins, and shortly there after, takes off with her "personal trainer" a smooth, 24yr. old latino dude named Julio or some such, pure Hollywood, but my boy is out 1 hot wife and the $10,000.

SO, I'm not going to make that mistake. I'm going to put the boobs on ME! That way, I can play with them 24-7 and never have to worry about the wife taking off with them, and Julio.
Posted By: tback

Re: Kelly Park - 05/19/09 09:06 PM

They'll cost more than $10k! You've got to figure in purchasing a new:

  • Life Vest
  • Wet Suit
  • Rash Guard
  • Bra's

Posted By: Timbo

Re: Kelly Park - 05/19/09 09:11 PM

OK, I'm getting full on size 44-DD airbags, so no more PFD's for me, and I'll be going bra-less, it's ok to stare, I understand, as I stare at big boobs too. I don't own a wetsuit yet anyway, or rash guards, so about all I've got to do is keep them from getting sucked into the spinnaker blocks and I'll be good...

I like the idea of having my own boobs though.

It's a Uni thing Dave, real men don't need no pretty little ladies crewing for them, just get out on the wire, haul out your own 44 DD and flog on!

Guys here in the Uk we refer to our Man Boobs simply as "Moobs", its a sign of distinguished old age and eating and drinking far too much good things in life.
Posted By: Timbo

Re: Kelly Park - 05/19/09 10:34 PM

Too much good things. Yes. I'm all for that! I'll be 50 the end of July, time for a Moob job!

Hey, my twin daughters (20yr. old Colegiate JR's) want to come over to England or Ireland this fall, to take some "study abroad" type courses, dealing with horse breeding. Any good ideas where I should send them? I might have to come for a few days to be sure the local Ale is suitable... grin

Re: Kelly Park - 05/20/09 03:32 AM

Viral meningitis. Been there, done that.

I ran at 105 F for a week before I drove myself to the ER and checked in. The hospital did the same thing, did a million tests, ran up $10k in bills and did.....squat, nada, nothing to cure me. It's viral so I just had to wait it out. But a huge reduction in malaise was had by IV fluids. The fever leaves you seriously dehydrated and that is most of the crappy feeling. If you can occasionally get a local doc to pump you up with IV fluids you'll feel lots better as you convalesce. It took weeks to stabilize and longer to get strong. I lost 30+ pounds over the course of the illness. Not a recommended diet, however.

Put a tarp over the boat and lay low for several weeks. Good luck, Timbo. It may be a slow road back.

Perhaps Timbo PM me with your Email address, my neighbour is very high up in the show judging and eventing circles here in England, almost for sure she could advise.

Now as for beer, sorry it would have to be real ales as the lager type you have in America is sort of frowned upon here apart from the get drunk as cheap as possible fraternity. Now I have an award winning Micro Brewery within about 5 miles, now we could talk real beer and perhaps show some real ales. Every second Tuesday in the month is a members only night and a good one to attend. wink Bare in mind that we have also on Wednesday night club F16 racing and I'm sure we could arange a sail.

Thanks Guys. I'm up and about, still got a headache, go back to the Dr. on Friday, hopefully he'll have something good to say.

In the mean time, hanging around the house, doing as little as possible, just ask my wife, who has had about enough of me... sick

Just wait until I get my Moobs, then she'll want to be my friend...but she's not touching them! They're MINE, ALL MINE!! grin

Easy on the meds! wink

Get well dude.
Posted By: Timbo

Re: Kelly Park - 05/20/09 02:04 PM

Hey, Doc says I've got to take all the meds, regardless of how silly they make me feel. I've got to find a doctor who will prescribe 8 hrs. of sailing a day, we all know that will cure just about any ailment.

Matter of fact, there was one Dr. in the hosp. who wanted to talk about sailboats, he lives on the other side of my lake here in Sebring and has seen me out. He wants one of those Hobie Adventure Island Kayak-trimaran thingys. I said, "DO IT!" And I'm going to take him out on the Prindle and try to teach him to sail, when they will allow it.

I hope he gets the cat bug, he's got two sons who would be great crew, ages 20-18, and a daughter about 15. If I could hoist my mainsail I'd be over there right now trying to get him hooked.

Or...maybe he needs a slightly used Blade. Yeah, that's the ticket, and I can get one of those fancy new Falcons!

MATT, Help!

MMmmm....new boat smell...
