Spinnaker chute, sock, sleeve, whatever

What ever it is called, mine (2006 Blade) is at the end of its life. I have to admit that I have never seen a Viper, or a Falcon or a Nacra F16. We know that VectorWorks is pretty much out of the picture.

So that leaves me pondering my options for replacing the chute chute.
Will another manufacturer's just slide onto my existing hoop?

not likely another manufacturer snuffer will fit your hoop, your local sailmaker should be able to copy your old snuffer pretty easily and that will be the cheapest way of replacing it, if you do replace the hoop and order a off the shelf replacement the SNU is highly regarded but all the major manufactures will have something for you.

Alas, they don't exist. Local anywise.
I am fairly landlocked here.
But bundling it up and mailing it away to be copied is a possibility.

The existing one lashes to the pole with grommets. These grommets are pulling out of the weakened fabric. I am wondering about other solutions. Ie, a sleeve over the pole like a laser sail, or webbing straps sewn on.

The Goodall bag has velcro strips, about 6 of them, very quick and easy to install. we hide a spare tiller extension in ours.

It's just no longer VectorWorks. The catamaran part is Falcon Marine, and I'd guess that Matt could either make you a replacement, or that he is using the same snuffer design.

I wonder if he actually makes them or if they are ordered from the Peases (or someone like that).
What is the current material of choice? Pentex Mylar?

I believe that you can order this from Falcon Marine.

Mylar is the current "in" material. We burned through a mylar bag after about 15 days of sailing. Our pretty new boat also came with a Mylar bag (default on the SNU) and it too has minor holes in it after about 30 days of use. My advice is to get a mesh bag made. They last significantly longer.

I'm not experiencing that problem. I'll have to give my "sock" a thorough inspection.

When you say mesh, can you give me some details? Same as tramp material?

Mesh is a very poor choice as it tends to "grab" the spinnaker and make it significantly harder to hoist and retrieve due to the added friction. The nylon and the mesh both tend to give which is why the firmer, smoother mylars are favored. They have much less friction but little abrasion resistance and poor UV resistance. The best material I have found is balloon cloth as it is relatively stiff, has very good abrasion resistance, has excellent UV resistance and comes in a variety of colors and usually cost less.

Yours is probably Dacron indeed and slides into the ring.
If your snuffer has lasted from 2006 till now I think you can say that is a very high quality bag!

I haven't been here in forever, but I make my own snuffer bags with relatively heavy nylon from sailrite. Problem is that it is in no way meant to stay out in the sun for a long time. If you leave the boat set up outside then it needs a cover. PM me if you want me to make you one, I am bored in the cold white north (you are colder) and could put it together for the cost of the materials.
