UPDATE and Final Results

for 1999

There were very few holding back at these crowded starts of nearly 60 boats.
It's all over but the shouting. And again the competition was fierce, with no one sailor dominating the fleet. The fleet of nearly 60 boats ranged in age from 12 years old to 77 years old, and from novice to National Champs in ability levels.

There were plenty of pinwheels at these crowded mark roundings.

Scott Hubel of Performance Sail & Sport of Melbourn, Florida dethroned defending champ, Kirk Newkirk to capture the Perpetual Nationals Trophy for first place.
With winds of 10-15 mph again on this last day, Scott Hubel of Melbourn, Florida eked out the championship by a mere 4 points after 12 races. For the second year in a row the winner only took two bullets for the entire regatta.

Charlie Trinque of Pensacola, Florida had the early lead in the regatta and had the most first place finishes with three, but slipped to 2nd place overall. Paul Garlick of Sarasota, Florida broke a tie with Stan Woodruff Tampa, Florida. Woodruff was not only 4th overall, but was first place in the Masters Division.

Here are some of the Master. From l to r are Nelson Wright, Rick White, Jim Glanden, Bill Brooks, Stan Korzeniewski, Dick Anderson and Fred Johnston
In the Masters Division there were twelve sailors over 55 years old. Stan Woodruff won, with Nelson Wright of Orlando, Florida edging out Rick White of Key Largo, Florida for the second spot. The oldest sailor was Stan Korzeniewski who had 77 years of experience.

In the Youth Division from l to r are Laura Young (13), Jenna MacLaverty(16), Harry Newkirk(13) and Tommy Fruitticher(12).
In the Youth Division 13-year-old Laura Young of Port Clinton, Ohio won by over 100 points over the 2nd place finisher, Jenna MacLaverty (16 years old) from Toronto, Ontario. Last year's champion, Kirk Newkirk, brought his 13-year-old son, Harry, who took 3rd place in the division. There were four participants in the Youth Division. Hopefully, next year we will have plenty more.

Here are some of the Ladies Div and from l to r are Barb Short, Dior Hubel, Gail Rohrer, Judi Szabo-Stull, Kathy Clark, Kathryn Garllick and Kathy Kulkoski.
Kathy Kulkoski of Sandy Hook, New Jersey won the Ladies Division, unthroning last year's champ, Kathryn Garlick. Garlick had to settle for 2nd place. The Open National Champ's wife, Dior Hubel took third in the division. There were 10 ladies sailing in this division.

UPDATE after 2nd day of Racing

Winds staying the 15 mph range for the entire day, although some holes existed with winds as low as 8 mph and those holes seemed to lure some sailors to them. Scott Hubel managed to stay far away from those formidable holes taking two bullets, a 4th and 8th. This moved him into the overall lead, with Charlie Trinque slipping to second place.

Stan Woodruff moved into third, followed by Paul Garlick, Charlie Harp, Dan Kulkoski, Mike Fahle, Rick White, and Jim Glanden.

With a slight port favored line, the fleet charges down just before the start.

UPDATE after 1st Day of Racing

With winds of 10-15 and mild chop, nearly sixty boats got off the line with no general recalls -- not that there weren't some tough aggressive sailors battling it out for the lead.

THe race committee, headed up PRO Sean Ferrel managed to get in 4 long races before the afternoon was up.

18-year old Charlie Trinque from the Pensacola, Florida area has jumped into the overall lead of the regatta with two bullets and a 7 and an 8. Dan Kulkoski of New Jersey has never had a finish over 8 and has a good hold on second place, followed by Scott Hubel from Melbourn, Florida. Stan Woodruff of Tampa, Florida not only commandingly leads the Masters Division, but also finds himself in 4th place overall.

Last year's 2nd place finisher, Paul Garlick of Tampa Bay area is in a slim 6th place.

Leading the Ladies Division is Kathy Kulkoski of New Jersey and is also in 9th place overall. In the Youth Division Ohio's 13-year old Laura Young is leading the way.

The starts were very crowded despite a long line. To the left is the start of the first race.

After StartAnd they're off. This is after the start of the first race.

Full results will be coming.

Wave Nationals UPDATE as of Sept 13

There are already 50 paid sailors registered for the Wave Nationals, of which there are 15 Women, and 9 Masters (55 +), and there are many more expressing interest. (The youngest thus far is 13-year-old Laura Young from Port Clinton, Ohio. And Zach White, 10-years-old grandson of Rick White, is practicing every weekend to get ready.) And there is already a waiting list for charters for the limited number of boats that Hobie is providing. (By the way, Hobie Cat Company had promised to send 15 boats for charter. Then recently, due to the increased demand, they are now sending 24 boats. That, however, is still not meeting the demand for charters) So, it would be a really great idea to charter from your local area and/or bring your own boat. The general rules and sail measuring rules are already posted . For more info, click here

WOW! Hogsbreath Saloon and Beer (you know, the folks that say, "Hogsbreath is Better than No Breath at All") have signed up to be a major sponsor for the 2nd Wave Nationals in Key Largo. There should be no shortage of beer and Rick won't be able to buy that cheap stuff he always gets. Hooray! Can't wait!
