Ashby wins 2007 A-Cat Worlds

Races were canceled today (Friday) due to high winds. Yesterday's results conclude the event.

Ashby is Perfect on the Fourth Day

In winds of around 10-12 mph, light chop and no kelp, Glenn Ashby of Australia sailed two near-perfect races to take a 2-point lead over USA’s Lars Guck in the 2007 A-Cat World Championships in Islamorada, Florida in the Florida Keys.
In both races today Ashby managed to stretch out his lead. In the second race he was challenged closely by Luc Du Bois of Switzerland.
For the first Ashby held the lead all the way around with Guck staying close a first, but fading. Scotty Anderson of Australia was in the mix of things. Pete Melvin of the USA had a bad first leg, but made it back to the low teens in position around the last weather mark, but managed to finish in 9th place thereby maintaining a solid 3rd place overall
At the finish it was Ashby, Guck, Hoekstra, Anderson, Beike, Du Bois, Calabria, Booth, Melvin, Daniel and Cope.
The first race of the day allowed Ashby to tie the series with Guck at 8 points each. Melvin bettered his position on Mitch Booth by gaining a few points. Luc Dubois passed Charlie Ogletree of the USA and maintained 5th place overall

The second race again had Ashby dominating and Guck trying desparately to pass, but the USA hope just kept dropping back. Finally, at the finish Ashby just nosed out Du Bois at the finish. Guck came in 3rd dropping him into 2nd place overall by two points.

Below: Lars Guck was charging hard, but could not keep up with Glenn Ashby today

With only one race scheduled to complete the regatta, the pressure is on Guck to not only get ahead of Ashby, but to put a couple of boats in between them – not an easy task.
Pete Melvin took a 4th place in the last race of the day, maintaining 3rd spot by 14 points ahead of Du Bois, who moved ahead of Booth by 2 points. Ogletree is back another 10 points with 47 points.

There was a bit of carnage at the weather mark. It appeared the sailor did a roll tack -- he rolled right off the side of the boat

Boat builder from Sweden, Goran Marstrom had a much better day today

Below: Mitch Booth of the Netherlands dropped back from 4th overall to 5th overall with two 7th place finishes for the day

The mark rounding at mid fleet were very crowded, as you can see below
