I am just about done with my H17 rebuild project and am just down to the jib. I have the stock small jib, and I used to have a H17 with a H16 jib that seemed a little larger. I am considering the super jib or the TheMightyHobie18 jib for this boat and re-locating the jib travelers to the tramp sides. Any ideas anyone has, or if you have tried this, pros, cons, ect would be greatly appreciated and valable in helping me decide. (The main is a new calvert square top)

Thanks in advance!!

Mike

Mike,

It depends, are you racing against me?????

I've spent alot of time recently shopping for jibs. I was set on a TheMightyHobie18 jib but after looking closer the TheMightyHobie18 has a long foot (genoa style). If you look at the new boats, they have gone to the square top main and the high aspect, "deck sweeper" jibs. (N5.5 is kinda the exception). The high aspect jibs are generally taller and/or come down lower to the bow while having a shorter foot. The shorter foot makes tacking much easier and quicker. I would also guess the air flow with the tall square top is also better.

I looked and looked for used but good condition catamaran sails and they are pretty much nonexistent. There are some out there but nothing I could use. I have settled on a jib from an Olympic Star. These guys trade them in nearly every year so they are virtually new. Although Star's are monohulls they are cut very much like the newer cat jibs. They also generally have a zipper luff which is desirable for cats. I found mine at Masthead Sailing Gear in St. Pete. They also made my square top main from a used/new sail and I have had great luck with it and many positive comments. Prices are very reasonable. Figure out what dimensions you want and check out their website to see if they have a sail that will fit. http://www.mastheadsailinggear.com

Good Luck,

Jeff

I've cut down my H16 jib for my 17 so I can furl it.

I'm putting the jib track along the side rails in the same spirit of the TheMightyHobie18. I'm placing them so 3/4 of the length of the track is behind the stays.

Mike, I love the Calvert Square Top Main on my 17, and would also endorse the Super Jib. It's a huge help downwind, and you can always furl it if it's too much! Brian
