Maybe by the time you finish building the boats your boys will be big enough ! (joke)

Suddenly they go into a growth spurt and my big dad has changed into my old man !

Reading this thread with interest.

Wouter,

That being the case...... I'd need to build another Taipan.

Then the 3 of us would have a choice of weapons when we do battle.

Although I suspect the real battle may be getting all three to agree on what boat to sail on any given day.

We actually had one when Dad first bought his boat. We were not aware of it at the time, and would probably not get one now.

It was the fastest we had gone, we were out in front, in about 22 knots, but alas we were suddenly both in the drink, everybody said it looked really good how the top section seemed to just jump up for a second.

We replaced it with the heavier version and have no worries now. The lighter superwing is not quite tough enough for strong winds, to rely on.

Mine is about 9.0m, with an axis of 160mm by about 65mm.

But, the stingray I believe is a semidevelopment boat, as long as you fit in the sail area it should not matter too much.

So do I understand you correctly when I summerize that the Stingrays have 9,0 tall masts of exactly the same section that the Taipan 4.9 use ?

Do the stringray actually use this height or is it just allowed in the rules but found not to be optimal ?

If they use the 9 m than can you also tell me where the hounds are on their masts and where the diamond wires are attached to the mast.

As you know I'm trying to fit a taller mast to my taipan 4.9 and this information would really help.

Many thanks,

Wouter

Wouter,

The hounds on my mast are set 2.8meters from the top of the mast.

I do not know the rules governing mast height or sail sizes for the Stingray.

I think there were around 600 stingrays built from the 1970's on. Initially they had a 28 ft mast with a pin top main. They then changed to a 9meter mast with a small square top. Today there are very few Stingrays left in captivity. And I don't know if you can say they typically use any particular section.

I have heard of them even using a 5.7 rig.

My Stingray mast is much heavier than my 4.9 mast allowing for the extra mast height.
