Great Winds and Great Sailing for Annual Hogsbreath-Keys

Key Largo, Florida, May 1, 2005
Miami area sailors won the top two places in the Annual Hogsbreath-Keys 100 Race, a 100-mile trek from Key Largo to Key West for high-speed catamaran sailboats. The first place boat finished the 100 miles in just over five hours – averaging nearly 20 mph.
Seventeen catamarans started on the Bay Side of Key Largo in Buttonwood Sound. The course ran down the Intracoastal Waterway to the Channel Five Bridge where the fleet sailed to the Atlantic Side of the islands. They stopped in Marathon on the first leg, and completed the journey to Key West on the following day, finishing at Smathers Beach in Key West.
Sailing an Olympic Class Tornado, Jamie Livingston of Miami sailed with Brian Lambert to take the first place trophy, while father and son team Jay and Jared Sonnenklar of Miami took second place sailing an Inter 20.

New England sailors, Garrett Norton and Mike Ferrara finished in third place.

It was a reaching start in 15mph wind.

The fleet went screaming off across the first sound on the 100-mile trek

Eric Roberts and Dave Wier blast off with the Supercat 20 tall rig

Father and son team of Jay and Jaret Sonnenklar took 2nd place overall

One of the fastest boats in the fleet was the Marstrom 20 sailed by Carla Schiefer and Clive Mayo

The seas were pretty choppy and tough. Here the Hobie Tiger sailed by Scott and Dior Hubel lost the wind going under the Channel 5 Bridge and did a little "tea bagging."

The Supercat 20 seemed under control, but they said they were quite a bit overpowered for the winds

The Race is sponsored by the Hogsbreath Saloon of Key West, Calvert Sails in Islamorada, Catamaran Sailor Magazine and www.OnlineMarineStore.com. And special thanks to the Upper Keys Sailing Club for hosting the start of the race.
