Day Three (Last Day -- Sunday)

Winds Still Around 15k for the Last Races

Paul Garlick Captures the Title

l to r: Kathryn & Paul Garlick and Mike Fahle round the A mark an on to the reaching leg.

The final races were sailed in more good winds and light chop. The winds held between and 10-15 mph the entire morning. The weather has been absolutely unbeatable -- sunny skies, good wind, relatively flat seas! Guess the Florida Keys ARE a sailing paradise!

Six races were sailed today, making a total for the regatta of 18 races -- a tie for the most races run in this regatta. All thanks to a RC of Doug Young (PRO), Carol Fahle, Barb Short, Rick White (Mark Boat), Drew Gillet (Helper Boat) and Mary Wells (Scoring Ashore).

The Leeward Mark is attacked by a whole horde of Waves

Paul and Kathryn Garlick (in red jumpsuits) negotiate the leeward mark in a crowd

Speaking of scoring, Stan Woodruff said, "I have been sailing for forty years and have never seen this before -- you come into the beach and the scores are already posted. Unbelievable!"

The Races

Paul Garlick continued with more aces and easily won the Nationals. Mike Fahle held a solid second place -- it seemed that these two were side by side the last half of the regatta.

Jim Glanden totally dominated in the Masters Division edging out Stan Woodruff by over fifty points. Kathy Kulkoski really got it going today to recapture the Womens Division and defend here two-year reign as Queen of the Waves, edging out Kathryn Garlick for the honors.

In the Youth Class, Harry Newkirk came from way behind and scored four second-place finishes in 5 races to capture his first Youth National Championship.

Day Two (Saturday Afternoon)

Garlick Stretches Lead, and His Wife Takes Over Ladies Lead

The winds built to 18-20 for the last half of the day, which made for some really screaming reaches. Paul Garlick was not phased by the heavier winds and hiked himself to two more bullets, stetching his lead over Mike Fahle to eleven points.

Master Jim Glanden has been right up front in every race and has a commanding 50-point lead over second spot Master, Stan Woodruff.

Kirk Newkirk, the first National Champ, takes the lead around the weather mark and goes on a hot reach.

Others on this reach were in hot pursuit!

Kathryn Garlick overtook Defending Ladies Champ, Kathy Kulkoski, and is leading her by 13 points and moved into 4th place for the Open Class. Keep in mind, however, that in a big fleet like this it is really easy to have a bad start and lose 30 points in a heartbeat.

Tommy Fritticher is leading Harry Newkirk in the Youth -- mainly because Newkirk was over early after a General Recall and dipped to exonerate himself instead of rounding the end that is required when the India Rule is in effect. Otherwise, the two have been battling it out neck and neck the entire series.

The Leeward Mark was very crowded all day!

Dave White is still hanging tough in the 5th spot.

Day Two (Saturday Morning)

Garlick Lost His Cape, But Still has Good Lead Overall

Winds were much better today -- 15-18 mph and still with flat seas. Garlick suffered a 7th and 8th place finishes out of the four races sailed this morning, yet still has a small lead of five points over Mike Fahle.

Jim Glanden is dominating the Masters by over 50 points. In the Ladies Kathy Kulkoski has taken a small lead over Kathryn Garlick. And Tommy Fruittichker has a 5-point lead over Harry Newkirk

Day One (Friday)

Paul Garlick Completely Dominates the First Day

Paul Garlick claims the lead around the reach mark and then pulled away for four bullets for the day

There were nearly 40 boats registered for this great event and all were eager to get going. The winds were forcasted for around 10 mph, but they are supposed to be 15 on Saturday and build to 20 on Sunday. Sort of a great way to get everyone usedd to their boats.

Four races were sailed and each was won by Paul Garlick going away -- no contest. Hold on! The third race was a squeaker with Garlick inching out Mike Fahle. Still in all Garlick has all bullets and is already 10 points ahead of the second place boat (by the way, that is Fahle). And for you whiners from last year complaining about non-Hobie sails dominating, Garlick is sailing one of the new charter boats with stock sails. Also interesting is the new Hobie stock sails is a much better sail than they have issued in the past years -- the material is stiffer and the shape is much better.

Ever heard of a Pinwheel? Well, here is perfect example as these boats round a very croweded leeward mark.

Youth sailors are doing extremely well, with Tommy Fruitticher and Harry Newkirk in a tie for third place overall

Dave White is holding on to a narrow lead over Jim Glanden, who is leading the Masters Fleet.

Another Garlick in the stew -- Yep! Kathryn Garlick is leading the Women's Division and is in 9th place overall

Standby for tomorrow for more exciting pictures (the wind will be better and there should be more excitement.

Paula Smyth raced and Randy Smyth took over the kids. But, you know Randy could not just stay on shore, so he grabbed a Wild Thang powerboat and came to the races. Notice the baby is in the stroller, securely tied down.

The starts were crowded but clean, with only two individual recalls for the day.
