Wave Championship in the Caribbean

Here is the information about the Wave Championship:

The dates: October 8-11, Friday through Monday.

The location: Provo in Turks & Caicos Islands in the Caribbean

The host: The Provo Sailing Club

The host hotel: Club Med

How to get there: Fly into Provo Airport

The dates for flying are 5th (Tuesday) through 14th (Thursday) which allows you some leeway to arrive early and leave late (have a bit of vacation at the same time).
We now have discounted air fares through American Airlines.
Here is the info on traveling:

Passports are preferred, but proof of birth and a picture ID will suffice.

Accommodation options: The races will be right in front of Club Med, but other accomodations are available.
Comfort Suites $90 plus tax/gratuities = $118
Ocean Club (next to Club Med) $130 night for Junior Suite.

The local dealer has ordered 20 new Calvert sails, rudder kits, mainsheets, etc.., so all of the boats will be in about the same shape. That way we can have as many as 40 teams and do a round robin until the last day.

We plan an early registration Friday morn, then we will be racing from Friday morning to Monday afternoon.
Following is a tentative schedule:
* Friday kick-off Beach Bash BBQ & Bonfire featuring native cuisine, music and comp beverage for sailors. Beverage comped for sailors for the duration (night and day).
* Saturday cocktail party tentatively hosted by the Gov. Conch Fritters, Conch Salad and Lobster tidbits. Gov committed early summer and is still on vacation so I don't have a confirmation. We have the party w/or w/out him.
* Sunday Sunset Sail with rum punch and nibbles.
* Monday Presentation dinner.

Hand-made trophies (they are pretty cool) three deep in the following catagories: Open, Masters, Womens, and an exibition U-15. Also a single trophy for the winner of the "Plate Fleet", or the twenty who did not make the final cut. One big Floater that lives here for the winner of the Open division.

The venue: We will be sailing on Grace Bay, on Provo's north shore. It is beautiful with 10 miles of beach and great water. Winds are usually SE 10-15mph and seas flat.

Dress is casual, and “formal” is considered clean deck shoes, khakis or nice shorts and a collared shirt.
Of the 40 slots, 5 will be reserved for the host country sailors

Sails: If you wish, you can bring your own sail.
Disadvantages: It is more expensive, because you will have to pay extra air fare for the sail. And keep in mind that this will be a round-robin event, so you will have to switch your sail to a different boat at each shift change.
Advantages: If you have your own sail to compensate for your weight being extra heavy or extra light, it might make some difference to level the playing field for you. But in this class getting good starts and clear air is really the key to success.

Please note that this event has been renamed to Wave Intergalactic Championship. The International Sailing Federation will not allow us to use the word “World” or the word “International.” At this point in the preparations, it is very difficult to delete the word “World” from all forum posts and other materials and publicity relating to the event, but we are doing our best to comply with the ISAF requirements. Some of the information still has the name Wave Worlds on it, so replace in your mind with Intergalactic.

It is just a name, and it will not affect the championship in any way. It is shaping up as a great international event, even though we can’t call it that. The main purpose is to help inspire the use of Waves as a one-design racing class around the world (and, as the name says, the universe).
