The photo is misleadingly scary looking. The sharp thing at the stern is the rudder and it's going to be some distance away from you if you are in the water amidship. The other sharp thing, the dagger board, is not coming down on you like a ton of bricks.



The boat comes back up gently enough that it's not likely anything is going to easily pierce your skull. It's a slow motion kind of movement when everything comes back right side up and you can simply put your hand up to push yourself away from the hull as it comes to you.



If the boat comes back up hard it usually keeps on going and capsizes on the other side. That's when you learn to point the bows into the wind before you try to right it.
