This has been brought up before, and I think all you can do is try to sand/scrape/carve the area around it to smooth it off. As long as it's not all the way through, a gash really won't affect anything, other than looks.

These things are pretty hard to damage; but there's not much to do, if you do damage them. Nothing sticks to them, at least not for long.
