without captive pins, you'll have the same problem as with the damnit-rings. Drop it in the sand and wave bye bye! Get shackles with captive pins whenever possible - the pins can only be loosened and slid back but will not come all the way out - the threads won't clear the through hole in the slack side. Sometimes, however, you might have clearance issues with the captive pin shackle and whatever you are pinning since some of the pin stays in the opening in the shackle.
