HOBIE 17 Tuning Guide
1.MAST RAKE: On the bridle 10 hole chainplates, start at the 3rd or 4th hole from the top in all but heavy air. In the higher breezes, put the bridle wire in the top or 2nd from top hole. Some heavier skippers may want to go down to the 5th hole down but this is not recommended as the boat was designed to have a lot of mast rake.
2.RIG TENSION: Snug enough to allow the mast to rotate to 110 degrees off the wind.
3.TRAVELER POSITION: Upwind; 2-3" from center works very well to make the boat go very fast upwind in all but heavy air. Drop the traveler 5-8" to go fast in the breeze!
Downwind; drop the traveler down to the inner hull shear in all
conditions. In a following sea (surfing), put the traveler at the
hiking strap and play the mainsheet. The 17 will do the wildthing but if it flies to high, the wing will dig and slow you down.
4.MAST ROTATION: Point the rotator at the daggerboard hole
upwind for high pointing. All the way to 100-110 degrees for
downwind. 80-90 degrees for reaches.
5.BATTEN TENSION: Just take the wrinkles out and stand up the battens in the comptip area, no more!
6.DAGGERBOARDS: All the way down upwind (class measurement) when flying a hull. In marginal hull flying conditions, raise the windward board. 2" down downwind to just fill the entire board slot.
7.OUTHAUL: Tight when you are upwind except in lumpy waves then ease 2". 4" out for a reach. All the way out downwind.
8.DOWNHAUL: Upwind; slight wrinkles in light air progressively applying downhaul as the wind increases. Downwind, ease up 1" unless there are already slight wrinkles along the luff.
So there you have it! The 17 is a wonderful boat to sail especially from the wings on the trapeze. Enjoy these race proven settings!!
