I say glue it and forget it. If you heat the post with a torch, you risk hull damage. If you use vasoline, it will not bond.
The only thing I can recommend is a "glue". I have been using expoxies for a long time at work. The two best for all-weather application I have found are: PC-7 and PC-11.
PC-7 is a grey epoxy and is unbelieveably stong. When I have re-built H14's and H16's for people, I use this on the casting joints to stop frame creaking. I have also used it in emergency situation to patch hulls.
PC-11 is a white epoxy specifically designed for marine use. I use it to re-coat hull bottoms. It sands and molds great.
Both can be applied underwater.
