One brief addition. Don't throw away your old wires, keep them for reference! -- taking into account that they may have some stretch. They have no other practical value of course.
I beg to differ:
First, and by far the most important use for broken stays.... They are PERFECT for dousing (and raising) the turkey from the fryer when ready
2nd.. i stretch an old one from my livingroom area into my dining room area ... to hang and dry my main and or spinnaker after a bath!
