I think I am going to try to make it out for this, should know for sure this evening. If we are not staying at the campground though is it alright to leave the boat there overnight (Fri/Sat)? My parents live up in Kill Devil Hills and I'd plan to just stay there, but bring the boat down to Camp Hatteras Friday after work.

No problem leaving your boat overnight. There is a sailing center on the sound front that is beside the campground. The campground also has a conference center located in the same area that is used for the regatta, so it is an ideal race site. Here is a site map.
