This is similar to auto racing which has done this for decades. It is always cheaper to run more than one car. When I raced, the team that took care of my car took care of three other cars in the series I ran. You had a designated crew person and if one of the cars had an issue (ie: crash) they had plenty of personnel to fix it.
When I ran the St. Pete Grand Prix, the car I was drafting with in qualifying lost it in turn one. I t-boned him and we both slid into the wall. Three corners of the car were destroyed along with the front-end. There was only four hours until the race but because of the extra personnel the team was able to put the car back together in time for race.
