Essentially the sailors wanted control of the class rather than letting the builder dictate prices and specs.

A similar thing happened with the Dart 15 (aka Sprint 15) catamaran where the Association bought the moulds from Laser, found a suitable builder in South Africa and it has revitalised the class with new boats coming in to the UK for virtually the same price that Laser were charging 3 or more years ago.
