I also de-masted once, but upwind of my launch. Still, I was to weather of some rocks on Saba Island while at the Bitter End a few years ago. I pulled the mast aft, to hang / drag straight aft. I grabbed a corner of sail and lifted a batten which created a small lateen rig. Got me across Saba and into the main harbor area.
