From your comment, you can't judge the telltales the same way as you would in sloop mode.

Which begs the question as to what method works best at evaluating your heading.

The tells on a main are not nearly sensitive enough to steer off , in my opinion.
5 degrees in angle is way too much swing normally and the amount needed is dependent on the wind and wave conditions so some fixed number is bogus 99% of the time.

I have asked a lot of the top guys what they use and pretty much universally the answer has been – FEEL

Know your boat. If you are not moving forward as fast as you should (or as fast as those around you) with the wind pressures you are in then you are doing something wrong with the tiller and/or the sheet.
