I used it for the Steeplechase last year and it wasn't a problem even with GPS mode turned on. Now for something like the RTI it probably wouldn't make it. When you turn off GPS mode battery life is not an issue. It's not as accurate using cell towers but for what we're using it for it doesn't need to be.
