The lay-up board can be melamine surfaced chip board. Just make sure it is smooth/gloss finish, not a matt or textured. Cheaper than sheet glass and larger size readily available. Don't forget a release agent, spray film is sufficient. If preparing panels for decks, all decks are less than 2100 x 400 millimeters so one 2.4 melamine sheet is sufficient.
